Free AOL security tools?

Does anyone know more about them? Other than signing up for an AOL e-mail
address, do they load spyware or the famous AOL strings in the registry
that are constantly phoning home giving away user info - or is this a
righteous program?

Thanks for the pointer... that's an interesting site.

It really confuses me too... because the AOL Virus Protection
(antivirus component) is powered by McAfee... while its AOL Active
Virus Shield is powered by Kaspersky.

I don't really understand what's happening here... Anyone casting more
light would be appreciated...

AOL's Safety and Security Center is/was part of AOL's Software
Interface. I myself would never install _any_ AOL Software on _any_
computer that I own, and I have an AOL account.

If you are looking for a freeware AV,

Active Virus Shield is a 100% KL product with an AOL skin. Read the
EULA, and do _not_ install the AOL Security Toolbar. Most people,
including Eric Howes, consider the toolbar to be spyware. Before I
upgraded my KIS 6 installation to MP1, I installed AVS and used it for
about a month with the WinXP FW and/or S-K PFW 4.3. Worked great.

And so, why is AVS free? AOL paid KL for the rights to distribute AVS
as freeware. It is obviously a marketing stunt on both of their parts.
Why is Opera now freeware instead of adware?
