can't get rid of problems that spybot finds

I'm running windows 2000. I'm using AVG and zonealarm firewall, but
something obviously got onto the PC. I noticed that the windows
automatic updates keeps on switching off so I downloaded spybot and it
came up with about 10 items with names like "disable firewall",
"disable sp2" etc. Spybot says that it fixes the problem, but run the
problem and they are there again. I've run spybot in safe mode, fixed
the problems and then got back to windows and... the problems are still
there again. The PC has crashed a couple of times in the last month and
I fear these problems are at the route of it. I used to use norton
antivirus and firewall but they didn't help so I'm trying AVG and
    zonealarm

    Any ideas??

after much thought, came up with this jewel:

Perhaps it is time to start over. Save all important files to removable
media. Write down all your mail settings. Make a copy of your
bookmarks. Be sure you have all drivers needed(video, network card, sound
etc.) on removable media. Buy a router. OK,here we go! Download any
security software you need and put it on disk. I use AntiVir and
SuperAntiSpyware as my main protection along with Firefox, Thunderbird,
    Spybot, AdAware, Spywareblaster. Whew!
    Now format and start over.
Don't want to do that? Go to my pages(see below) and try to clean up
your mess. It probably would be better because you might learn
    something.
    Good Luck!

Use SUPERAntiSpyware, it worked for me when all else failed.
