Anyone have an opinion on Zone Alarm, is it good, bad, or ugly?

Free Firewall: Great! Best one currently available.
    Everything else: No.

I use ZA AV and it includes a "better than free" firewall. The user
interface for AV is lousy and I've had trouble with the license after
upgrading to a newer version... overall I'd say it works better than
either Norton or McAfee's AV/Firewall and it was a heck of a lot
cheaper ($19.95 for one year.) I would buy it again.

I have also been impressed with Trend Micros Internet Suite (FW/AV)
since I loaded it on my Mother's computer I have not had any incidents
that I've had to help her fix (unlike the free ZA firewall where I've
had to talk her through "unblocking" programs). And every time I look
at her computer I can not find any spyware/adware/malware that has
snuck in under the wire - that is saying a lot if you knew how
clueless my Mom is when it comes to malware.

    deeply ugly. Best avoided.

That's the problem with asking a question like that, personal opinions
aren't worth much. ZoneAlarm works great for many people, including me.
Some, apparantly, have no luck with it.

Myself I'm running Kerio tweaked up tight as I can get it and it's never
let me down. Just about tried them all over the years and never did
rate ZA free version or paid up TBH. Horses for courses init? IMHO
it's down to the way one sets up a firewall and I've found Kerio the
best of the bunch for customising.

    HTH.

Are you using the pre-Sunbelt version of Kerio?

As for ZA, I think it was ok but uninstalling it was a nightmare! On
that basis alone I'd avoid it. There are others that do just as well (or
better?) that aren't such a PITA to uninstall.

Same reason I avoid Symantec like the plague!

Yes, IIRC Sunbelt aquired Kerio around end of 2005, yes?

    Hello:

If you're concerned about outbound filtering then you should go with a paid
version of software firewall. Otherwise the Windows Firewall (SP2) appears
    to be sufficiently adequate.

    Analyse this:

    Good luck

You would be better off to go buy a router with built in firewall.
