    Best firewall?

I've been using Sygate Pro, but it continually causes me problems.
This morning, for example, it insisted on blocking Outlook Express,
which I have been using daily. Removing the program from the
applications list and allowing Sygate to find it again worked last
time this happened. This time I had to delete ALL applications before
it would allow Outlook Express again.

SO, and I know the question has been asked before, what is the best
free firewall program that allows custom blocking rules and does not
contain the word "zone" in it?

Or is there one that is worth the money to license?

It's an old argument but using a firewall to try to close the barn door once
there's a fire in the barn is next to impossible. Any software firewall can
be compromised in XP if you run with administrator privileges so why bother
with a firewall that trys to monitor outbound traffic?

How did you get Sygate Pro without paying for it? I'd just like to
know how I missed that trick. I always had to use the free version.

The rest is a surprise to me. I've been using the free version for
over a year and have never had one problem with it.

Why are you apposed to firewalls with the word "zone" in it?
(For everyone else: yes, I DO know what she meant, don't talk to me.)

I paid for the pro version. That's why I would be willing to pay a
reasonable amount for another one that works as well or better.

I never had these problems either, until I moved to the country and
had to sign up for satellite service for the internet. I don't know if
that really has anything to do with it, but the first time I had to
allow Sygate to re-find Outlook Express was immediately after the
    satellite was hooked up.

I have also noticed other minor things, such as Sygate asking me to OK
a change in executable for an updated program days after the update
had taken place and after the changed executable had been used many
    times.

BTW, GRC's port probe says ALL my ports are open except port 80, which
    is stealthed.

Had ZA a while back. Decided to uninstall it, using ZA's uninstall.
It hijacked my browser. The only page I could see, regardless of what
URL I typed or clicked on, was a page telling me that I had to go to
ZA and download a new version. Took me a while to find the dll file ZA
left behind to cause this. My frantic emails to ZA were not answered
for four days. Then they told me to reinstall it.

No ZA for me again, thanks.

Opinions are personal beliefs or judgments that are not founded on proof or
    certainty.
Be careful, after all it's *your* computer.
Have a look at http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests_overview.php before
making further assumptions about the effectiveness of free firewalls. Press
the "view results" button at the bottom and look at how free and other
personal "firewalls" perform especially with regards to outbound control.

The *best* may not be free.

    Good luck
