Does anyone, besides me, get nervous when antivirus or antispyware scans
shows an all clean system? I mean with all of nasties out there you
would think that one would get infected at some point. I run SAS
freeware, Spyot, Nod32, MVPS Hosts file and only use firefox and
thunderbird. Are there test files for syware (kinda like EICAR for av)?

Since there are so many different kinds of "spyware", I doubt it.

Not to give you a complex or anything, but there are many forms of
malware in the world that do not get caught by even the best
anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-adware utilities. The chances of you
becoming infected with one are extremely slim because these forms of
malware are "targeted" to infect very specific companies and/or
individuals.

I don't know of any test files for spyware, other than using a sample
of real spyware to test with. You can look through your MVPS hosts
file if you want to find a site where you can try getting infected (I
don't recommend it, though) - the MVPS hosts file contains annotation
stating the reason that some sites are included, but you would need to
comment out any site you wanted to visit before opening your browser.

The jury is still out on what all of this means. EICAR tells you that
your AV is enabled, and what to expect if it detects something. It
doesn't actually tell you that it is capable of detecting anything
besides the EICAR test file, nor if one AV solution is any better than
another. Spycar might mean no more than what EICAR means.
BTW, I never find anything on my WinXP box (a FP from time to time),
and I collect malware scanners. I think that it just means that I have
boring internet habits.

It is healthy to have antispyware and antivirus software (as long as they
are updated and the computer scanned for threats very regularly). It is
cautious to not get into a false sense of security of "I have done all that
so I'm safe". Anything further is paranoia.

Exactly what I'm talking about, that's what makes me nervous, I don't want
to have that "false sense of security".

Don't use test files like Spycar, use actual spyware files (just don't
run them).
Here are a few nasties your anti-spyware should detect if it's good:

First, download the zip. Really good anti-spywares should detect it
when you download it (A.K.A., "Real Time Protection"). Second, if it
doesn't immediatly pick it up, scan the archive (don't unpack yet). If
it detects something, that's great! Do NOT delete them yet though. If
it doesn't, give it one more chance by unpacking (do not run files
after unpacking) and then scanning the files. It should detect all or
at least most. If it doesn't... well, don't get too attached to your
computer.
Delete the files immediatly after scanning.
I've said it twice, I'll say it again: DO NOT RUN THESE FILES! SCAN
ONLY.

The reason for this is that some anti-spyware's cheat by adding the
Spycar test files to their definitions instead of putting in what that
test is for (i.e. locking out users from changing the start page).

I understand your concern, but anyone stupid enough to ignore the 3
repetitive warnings I stated really deserves to be infected.
