No thanks!! It messed up my System Restore Points and once I removed
it, they were being made properly once again.

I realize one shouldn't go back more than a week or 10 days with SR, but
I didn't like how it wiped out 2 months of Restore Points, yet often
made 3 or more of its own on the same day.

    YMMV....Heather

Not to mention the questionable "standards" that M$ uses to define
"malware". There is certainly a conflict of interest when M$ has to
make a decision about the usefulness of one of their "partners'"
    software/eula/ethics...etc.

I recently attended a week long security love-fest with M$ and they
were touting Vista(tinv) as the be-all-end-all of your OS security
needs. They are even claiming that third-party security apps will be
"fluff" because they cannot do the job Vista will do inherently.

TBH, I'm looking forward to the mainstream acceptance of Vista, and
from the technical description of security improvements made by M$,
there is definitely a positive mind-shift by M$ to get it right, but I
don't for a mini ute believe (as claimed by their security brain
trusts), that they have discovered all of the un-thinkable ways in
which someone will circumvent their well-layed...er...vista.

    If you're game try this:

    Microsoft Knowledge Base: 256986

Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
    --
    Start, run, Regedit <enter>

    Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan

Right click that folder in the left tree view, and choose "Permissions"
With your username highlighted, click Full Control in the Allow column,
    and "Apply"

With the Scan folder highlighted choose:

Edit, New, DWORD value, and type in "DisableRestorePoint"
    and hit enter.

Double-click DisableRestorePoint in the right column, and set the Value to
    1, hexadecimal.

Right-click Scan in the left tree view, and choose "Permissions"
With your username highlighted, Uncheck "Full Control" in the Allow
    column, and "Apply"

Close the registry editor by hitting the X in the upper right corner, or
    File, Exit.
    ---
    Good luck

Thank you, Kayman. I did uninstall Windows Defender totally. But I
will keep this as a just in case.

I am not all that well versed in working on the Registry, so would have
a couple of questions before doing this.

    Cheers.....Heather

The word that best describes Microsoft is *hubris* followed by
arrogant. It's good to see that they now attach a high level of
importance it security. Sadly they think they have mastered it.

I'm sure the rest of the group would like to hear more about the
    Microsoft confab.

Re: Windows Defender out of beta

    Heather;

    Downloaded W/D (Final) 26 Oct. 06.

    WindowsDefender v1.1.1592.0
    Engine v1.1.1609.0
    Definition v1.14.1736.7

Happy to notice that as of to date System Restore Points are no more
    produced
It seems the bug has been ironed out by the final version of W/D.

    Kayman.
