That would be my best guesstimate. Either doing that messed up your compy or it contributed to an existing problem. It is hard to say without being able to sit in front of the actual machine. From what you describe, it sounds like a number of protocol and security keys have been altered.
Some of it sounds like malware - we have seen a number of baddies mess with these settings. However, if this were the case, I would have seen evidence of them in the WinPFind Log.

-- Have you tried a System Restore to a point before the madness started?

-- How does your machine run in Safe Mode? Do you have Safe Mode with Networking? You should be able to access the net in Safe Mode - give that a try and see if you still have problems. That answer will help narrow things down for us.

Will check back as time permits. I imagine Judy will as well.

    Best Luck

    Ok Patti,
Have looked through your logs. There doesn't seem to be and baddies running but there is some clean up you can do. But FIRST, could you go back into msconfig and re-enable the items you have turned off at Start up. Reboot and then run us a new HJT scan and post it here? I would really like to see what you have turned off because there are several items that DO run at Start up and were running when you ran the first scan that are unnecessary. I want to see what you felt should have been turned off.
Give me that new log with everything re-enabled AND with your BROWSERS turned OFF. Also please relocate HiJackThis to a folder of it's own.

I ususally have very little turned on at startup, but I will go back and try to see what I had on. Also, how do you turn browsers off and what do you mean about relocating HiJackThis to a folder of it's own.
Hey, is this fun working with someone who is so "not knowledgeable" about the workings of a computer, even though I am on it almost all day every day!!!
One thing I noticed today is the websites open faster than my yahoo mail page and my mail. When I go to delete an email, it takes several seconds, yet when I clicked the link on my email to this site, it happened immediately. That makes no sense to me.
    Thanks

I want you to go back into msconfig. Go to the Start tab and put the checkmarks back into any that you have removed. Then reboot. That way everything that is listed in Start up will start up and I can better see what all you had previously stopped from starting AND then I can tell you what you should stop and what should not be stopped. It may be that something you have disabled with msconfig is causing the slow down because it should be running...probably not but it is better to check and see.

By turning browsers off I mean they should NOT be open when you run HiJackThis. So if browsers are open, "x" them out so they are closed.

    To create a new folder:
Click START > My Computer > Local Disc C: > Program Files
Now, RightClick on an Empty Area and select New > Folder & name it HijackThis and Click ENTER. This is where the HiJackThis program should be located. That way it can automatically make backups so that any fixes done can be "undone" if we don't like the way the computer works.
Once you have done all of the above then run the new HJT scan, save the log as a text file and copy/paste it back in this thread.

    Patti, you still have items disabled by msconfig as noted in this entry in the log;
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
Please go back into msconfig and PUT ALL THE CHECKMARKS BACK IN. Click OK.
Reboot and run a new scan. I need to see EVERYTHING that is in the Start TAB of msconfig.

I am sorry, I didn't know you wanted me to check everything in msconfig. I never have them all checked, that is why I didn't send it that way to you.

Thanks! Let me go through this log and I will get back to you. Why I wanted this was to be able to look at everything in the start menu to be certain your slowdowns are not being caused by something you disabled at start up but is needed. I will go through this and get back ASAP.

    Hi Patti,

I just wanted to let you know that I didn't have much time to work on the sticky but a problem I am having with the attachments (screenshots, etc.) is the main cause of delay, once and if I get it sorted out with the site admin, I should be able to make it ready within a day or two.

More importantly, I wanted to comment on one thing: disabling startup entries.

One thing that you do not want to do unless you are an expert and know what you are doing is to use different ways (programs) to disable startup entries/services. Stick with one program/method so it would be much easier for you and others who are troubleshooting the related problems to analyze the issues...

So, enable everything that was disabled using different methods, then pick the program of your choice (Autoruns is a pretty good one but make sure you check the 'Hide Microsoft entries' option under the Options menu and click the refresh button afterwards. That way you zero-in on the 3rd party stuff and also avoid messing with system critical startup entries.

Other than that, I leave you in care of Jholland.

    ~TL

Thanks ~TL. Patti, please follow ~TL's advice and be sure that you have re-enabled everything you have disabled using the different methods, including AutoRuns.
If there are more items which need to show in an HJT log after this then run a new scan please. If everything is all ready re-enabled then just let me know.
    Judy
