    Another java question

I feel real stupid for asking this: My new machine, using parts and pieces
bought mostly at Newegg and put together by the undersigned, does not seem
to have Java of any kind installed, as far as I can tell. All software was
installed by me on a bare hard drive, using Windows XP Pro/Media Ctr, with
a new Gigabyte motherboard. Then all other software was installed, no
    Java, AFAIK.

Yet I am able to get to the New York server of Speakeasy which gives me (I
thought through a java applet) up and download speeds for my Verizon DSL at
3 Mbs-700 Kbps. 2800 Kbps down, 687 Kbps up, close enough for a Sunday
    from North Jersey.

So how does this work? Is there something in Firefox to let Speakeasy do
this, not Java? I haven't consciously installed Java, just MS Office Pro
2003, but there is no uminstall for anything java in add/remove programs.

How to check whether I have Java? So far I haven't really had anything go
wrong webwise, except one or 2 things that Firefox couldn't handle, but IE
did. I have the latest MS updates ... Symantec firewall and AV (via
work), BOClean antitrojan, SuperAntispyware, and tested with Ad-aware and
    Spybot.

Thanks in advance for your explanations!

How to check if you have Java:
    Go to http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/
    Do you see:
A: Text at the top, or
B: Text at the top and a confusing thingyamajigger thing taking up most
of the botton of the screen with a tannish creature-like-thing.

If A, you do not have java, and you may download it at
    http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

    If B, you do.

    Badaboom, badabang.

Speakeasy's speed test (assuming you are talking about the ones at
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest) use Flash, not Java. You can check this by
right-clicking on them, and a menu with Flash options will pop up.

The tests at broadbandreports.com use Java. Maybe you were remembering
    those?

Thanks! Both ways work, but the broadband reports site says I am quite a
bit slower than speakeasy. Of course, the closest server to me was not
available, and I had to go to Miami, rather than Parsippany ...

BTW: To see what the CURRENT running version of Sun Java is, open a Command Prompt and
    type...

    java -version
