Because Microsoft is trying to convince people that the MS OS is
similar to a Mac. You know, hide everything that makes it look like a
computer --- directories, disk utilities, command line interpreters,
etc. This is important for those who are afraid of computers.
Evidently, MS thinks that Apple having 3% of the market is too much.
When MS brought out Windows (FAT16, Win 1-3.1), they quit using the
perfectly good word /directory/ and switched to the Mac-like /folder/.
For crying out loud! Directory sounds computerish! When MS developed
and brought out FAT32 (Windows 95 to people who are afraid of
computers), one of the first things that they did was create the
directory "My Documents" (mydocu~1 in computerspeak). See! Just like
the Mac, you too can use spaces in filenames and folders (directories).
Spaces in directory and file names? What an incredibly stupid effing
idea. Is it any wonder that debugging software for the Windows API is
such a nightmare? In the dictionary, next to the word ambiguous should
be the Windows Logo with FAT32/NTFS written over it. Beam me up,
Scottie. Please.
