Your point regarding text emails and turning off preview in OE is a
good point. Yes, this is safe. So you don't use IE and you use OE in
its safest mode. This should be fairly safe. But with MS some exploit
is just ready to pop up at any time. So use caution.

I've been using caution since a vendor sent me the "I Love You" virus
years ago, back when I was still assembling and selling hardware. If
there is a way for someone to send me a virus, malware, spyware, or
crapware... in a text message I damend sure never heard of it. I await
    a shred of evidence.

I have finally given up on Internet Explorer but exploits weren't even
responsible for that. Opera 8.54 is as close to perfect for people
with low vision as I've found. Holding down ctrl and rolling the mouse
wheel with "magnify" any web page I've come across.

Attention: In a recently released document on securing your Windows
computer it was recommended that you execute the following commands on your
    system as soon as practical:

    Click <Start>
    Click <Run>
Type "Format %SystemDrive%" (without the quotes)
    Answer "Y" to proceed.

This will restructure your drive to use the most recent secure operating
    system format.
