Host file stops working

I hope this is the right group for this problem I'm having. I've been
using hpguru's host file for quite a while. The problem is that it
after one or two sessions online, the host file stops working. I have
it locked by zonealarm. If i reboot the computer, then it starts
working again. Then, the same thing happens. I have Win98se and use
Opera as my primary browser. The only changes i made to the host file
was to delete any references to Opera. I opened the host file in
wordpad and deleted any entry referring to Opera. There were no gaps
left between the entries after I made my deletions. Could I have
corrupted the file when I deleted those entries? Has anyone else had
there host just stop working and then start working after rebooting?
