    Is my boss watching me?

Our IT guy came and added something to my computer. He went to add/remove >
add windows components > management & monitoring tools > simple network
management protocol. This is listed as "agents that monitor the activity in
network devices and report to the network console workstation."

We have been having problems with our network connection (servers are across
the street). So, is the IT group spying on me, and what can this program
    do?

I used to work for SIS Bank (which is now Banknorth) here on the east coast,
My best friend is a Sr.VP for Banknorth and he oversees network architecture
    and security,

The IT group knows EVERYTHING that goes on with that computer you do on the
    network.
They don't even have to mess with your computer .
    Google "packet sniffer"
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search
    .. tip of the iceberg...

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is not spyware, it is not a Trojan keylogger and
will not capture information on you or what you do. It is a network protocol used to find
out information on the TCP/IP stack, the operating system and communication parameters.

    Don't be so paranoid !

SNMP = Simple Network Management Protocol

    Read
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...start_page.asp
and http://www.google.com/search?q=define:SNMP. Google will lots of
hits when searching on "SNMP definition". It is used to monitor the
devices on the network. It doesn't monitor the specifics within your
traffic. However, it will up the amount of traffic on the network
depending on how large is each subnet and how many SNMP-capable &
enabled devices there are. There are other network monitoring protocols
and software available. I've seen where a network was so heavily
monitored that it severely impacted throughput. Ask your IT department
to check how choked is your subnet.

It is your company's property, not yours. If they want to know what
hosts are connected to their network using SNMP, push updates, add
packet sniffers in the network to monitor your traffic, or add a
keylogger onto your host then they are complete legal to do so because
it is their property. If you're doing porn at work or abusing their
network, they'll know if they choose to utilize the resources to know.
They don't have to install anything on your desktop to know where you
are connecting, what type of content is being transferred, and what is
in the traffic sent to and from your host.

What was installed is not capable of spying on your web browsing, email,
messaging, etc. It is used for many purposes, all of them performance and
technical in nature, but having nothing to do with content.

    HOWEVER...

Tools needed to spy on you do not necessarily have to be installed on your
machine (some do, such as keyboard recorders). If your company has chosen
to watch what you do on company time, using company equipment, and you're
in the USA, then (1) they are legally entitled to do so, (2) they do not
have to tell you, and (3) they can watch your activities from outside your
computer as your data packets flow down the network lines. Furthermore,
they can install things like keyboard recorders without having to be at
    your desk to do it.

Rule of thumb for those using company equipment on company premises on
company time (in the USA): ASSUME YOUR ACTIVITY IS BEING WATCHED,
MONITORED, SPYED-UPON or whatever term you wish to give it. If whatever
you might wish to do of a personal nature isn't worth your job, then don't
    do it.

The world's first webcam was pointed at the Trojan room coffee pot at
the computer science department of Cambridge University. The purpose
was to avoid pointless trips to the coffee room by people working in
other parts of the building by providing a live picture of the state
of the coffee pot. The camera was installed on a local network in 1991
using a video capture card on an Acorn Archimedes. Using the X Window
System protocol, Quentin Stafford-Fraser wrote the client and Paul
Jardetzky wrote the server. The camera was connected to the Internet
in 1993 by Daniel Gordon and Martyn Johnson. At 0954 UTC on August 22,
2001 the camera was finally switched off and the pot (actually the
fourth or fifth seen on-line) was auctioned on eBay for £3350.

If you're on the network, you can be watched. But, on the bright side, if
you're a hard worker he'll see that and give you a pay raise!
