    Spybot S&D Past Its Prime?

Given the problems with updating, and the frequency thereof, and the stalled
1.4 beta 2 can Spybot still be considered a useful spyware tool? There is
Ad-Aware SE Plus, MSAS, Spysweeper, etc. out there that seem to be updated
far more often than Spybot is so is Sypbot still useful or no longer worth
    the effort?

Is anything else as effective as Spybot S&D? We have seen this
lag in updates at the end of version life before. In the end the
problem has always been resolved. Wait and hope is all I can advise.

I personally don't think you can get too critical. It is still a very
good and effective program that even the tech. guru's regularly
    recommend to this day.

As I understand it one man does all the development and maintenance work
on this program. I doubt that many of us would have done as much as he
has done. And for very little reward given that it is a totally free
    produce relying only on donations.

No, it's not past its prime. Yes, it's still extremely useful and
    definitely worth the effort.
That's my opinion, for whatever it's worth....

I'm not sure how to respond, given how the question was phrased. Is it
still useful or no longer worth the effort? That's something only you can
answer. Value (worth) is a subjective calling.

Now, if you were actually trying to say something along the lines of "My
opinion is it is no longer worth the effort, what do you think?" then you
can expect a lot a replies that are also subjective.

I'll offer mine. It's a tool. It's one tool. It has a purpose and fills a
niche that others can't. It finds and fixes things that similar products
can't (and the reverse is also true). Limiting oneself to one tool in the
name of security and privacy is a bit like telling the armed forces they
    can have one firearm...

    Cheers!

Even though I have been a long-time of Spybot (and Ad-Aware free
version) I have to say that Microsoft's (Giant) Anti-Spyware is also
very good; as is SpySweeper, but I have found that CounterSpy so far is
the best, and found significant spyware the others did not.

The dedication of the individual who does Spybot inspires awe. It's
still a very good anti-spyware tool.
