    is this a virus?

I have recently been getting spam apparently from my own email
address, usually with an extra bit tagged onto the front of the
    eddress.
I use mailwasher to screen my mail and use avg free, zonealarm and
    ad-aware.
I have also just downloaded and run hijackthis but need some advice on
    what to look for?
    Thanks, kev

Have an expert look at your HijackThis log.
Removing stuff indiscriminatly could be harmfull to your system.

I get a fair amount of spam from myself...

Just another spammer trick, and an attempt to get around filters.

Setting a filter to block messages to your own address cures this one.

Some Mailing Lists send messages back to you as coming from your own address.
That is why I had to disable that feature of my e-mail spam catcher.
Fortunately, I've found that spam using my own address is relatively rare, at
    least so far.

Also blocks test messages. <g> And some list messages, as David
Wright said. Actually, my ISP's filter does a really good job of
clearing the spam before I ever visit my mail, sidelining about 90% or so.

A Gmail account (good spam filtering) forwarded to my ISP account has
absolutely killed spam for me. From 12-15 spams per day (after ISP
filtering) to zero for the last 2 months, I am happy.

    A. - Please put your entire query in the BODY of your article.

    B. - Near-certainly, no.

A standard Stupid Spammer Trick, designed to get around brain-dead filters.

    > I use mailwasher to screen my mail

    [snip]

    Yuck.

Mailwasher is seriously broken crapware, especially the so-called "bounce
feature" (which turns your system into a robo-spamming menace to the entire
internet, and is ample cause for you to lose your ISP account due to the AUP
violations it commits on your behalf). The author of this garbage should be
    shot.

If you really do need some sort of "mail preview" utility, try "JBMail" (no, I
am *not* the "JB" in question there -- it's written by Jem Berkes), "nPOP", or
    even "POP3 Scan Mailbox",

    > and use avg free, zonealarm and
    > ad-aware.

    [snip]

Well, as the saying goes, "two out of three ain't bad."

I don't particularly care for (at least the free version of) AVG's user
interface; but it's not literally *bad* software.

Ad-Aware, of course, should be part of your standard arsenal of anti-spyware
tools; but do not mistake it for a panacea or prophylactic measure. It's best
used strictly as an after-the-fact diagnosis/fix-up tool. Ditto for "Spybot
Search & Destroy", which you didn't mention.

ZoneAlarm is basically over-hyped crap. While the "nagging nanny"
functionality might be somewhat useful to a foolish/naive user, if you think
it's providing effective "firewall" functions, you have been duped.

    > I have also just downloaded and run hijackthis but need some advice on
    > what to look for?

    [snip]

Nothing, unless you have reason to believe you have a malware infection that
the "first-line" utilities (specifically, "Ad-Aware" and "Spybot Search &
    Destroy") can't deal with.
