There is no uninstall in the Spybot group in the Start menu? There is
no uninstall entry for Spybot in the Add/Remove Programs applet (or
whatever they call it in WinXP)?
If no to both, reinstall it to recreate the entries and then uninstall
it again. After uninstallation, also use regedit to search on "spybot".
The uninstall does not clean out 7 filetype associations (which are all
for text-only files so the associations are pretty stupid), like .sbs,
..uts, .tinfo, and a few others. Then check the install path no longer
exists; any config or data changes after install will result in remnant
files that do not get deleted so you'll have to delete the directory
yourself.

Is there not an uninstall entry in Control Panel/Add or Remove etc.?
There is here, also using Windows XP.
If you've tried that, and it didn't work/work properly, you'd be doing
other users a favour by confirming that, or otherwise, and exactly what
the problem(s) was/were.
I've no intention of uninstalling Spybot as things are, but you never
know.
Cheers,
Roy
A friend who does not have access to these NGs asked me to help her and now
I have discovered a little more of the story. She had a virus removed by a
professional group but her spybot software keeps telling her that "Virus
Identified Worm / Spybot is found in file C:\System Volume
Information\_restore{38598398-C222-4C71-AFIC-19201B20D26D}\RP103\A001988.exe
"
She is very annoyed as she thinks spybot is unneccessarily telling her this
info but I did some surfing and directed her to this url
http://forums.techguy.org/t155295/s.html to clean out system restore.
Neither of us are techies. She should probably go back to the pros??? to
properly do the job but they could not even get her norton anti-virus
software running again after the re-format and ended up giving her avg
antivirus software.I also suggested getting a firewall (zoneAlarm has a free
one) rather than relying on XP's . What do you think. Your views are very
much appreciated.

Well the professional group are not very professional IMHO. The advice in
the TechGuy's forum is good.
ZoneAlarm is a good firewall.
There is nothing wrong with SpyBot S&D and you should be glad that it
detected what the "profesionals" didn't fix.

After uninstalling NAV leaves "stuff" behind. I am not sure whether it is
in the registry (likely) or elsewhere, but I ran into it when I wanted to
install my work NAV corporate edition (to which I am entitled). I was too
lazy to eliminate all traces of NAV and install the work edition, so I just
subscribed to another year of NAV 2002 updates.

No anti virus programs can remove a virus / worm etc. from system restore (I
assume your friend has WindowsME, if not disregard the following info)
To empty System Restore:
Start> System> Performance> File System> Troubleshooting and check "Disable
System
Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will empty your restore folder
and erase all checkpoints.
Next, Start> System > Performance> File System > Troubleshooting and uncheck
"Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Last of all, set the disk space allocated to the restore folder as follows;-
Start> System > Performance> File System > Hard Disc and adjust the slider
to 200 to 300mB Click Ok

Thanks for all the help.
Right now I am testing to make sure I have successfully created a pseudonym
email address. I have already started to receive spam.
