    Windows Messenger

I've set the Messenger service in XP to "stop" and its startup mode to
"manual" but it keeps starting on its own anyway. I use ZoneAlarm Pro and it
reports thousands of attempts to access the Internet each hour (sometimes
each minute). I've used Cont_Alt_Del and ended the msmsgs.exe process, but
it just restarts again. What other process is starting this useless (most of
the time) process? Other than increasing Internet "noise" it really does no
harm, but it pisses me off that it keeps doing its own thing.

I think Outlook Express and possibly Outlook will automatically start MSN
    messenger.

Also note, Messenger service in the "services" applet has nothing to do
with MSN Messenger. There are plenty of programs that will allow you to
control what programs automatically launch at startup.
I use StartupCop which is unfortunately, no longer a free download. Some
people had posted links to others in this group. They may have made it to
    our FAQ (http://shplink.com/misc/FAQ.htm).

Just go back into admin settings and totally disable it, I did last Nov and have not had
any problems, since it is not related to MSN Msgr...Kill the beast and be done with the
    annoyance..

Messenger service and msmgr.exe are two different things. If you just want
to get rid of MESSENGER - the one where you can send instant messages, I can
send you a reg hack on the newsgroup here to get rid of it entirely.
