Hey, there are some irregulairies in your hostfile, not all ip's are
    127.0.0.1
    But thanks anyway, good service!

Does anyone else have this problem: when I use the HOSTS file (referenced
below) my computer slows down _A_LOT_ ...to the point it is unbearable.

I just scaled the HOSTS file down to 20 or so that I see regularly.

Granted, I don't have a very beefy machine: 300 Mhz, 256 MB of RAM,
    running Win2kPRO.

The CPU pegs at 90-100% for a while (30-60 seconds), and I notice
SERVICES.EXE in the Task Manager is the problem.

Is it just me and my underpowered machine?

    i had the same problem.
    It was the DNS-client.
Weird as it may seem, i can still surf without.
So try stopping th dns-client to see if it helps

Oddly enough, yes. Which makes me wonder what, exactly, does the DNS-client
    service do...?

    P.S. Thanks for the tip!

    See,
    http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/win2...htm#DNS_Client

I think the DNS client service ends up trying to cache the entire hosts
file in memory. For large hosts file, this can chew up a lot of memory and
    cause system slow downs.
