    Movie Ads Player Through Speakers

OK, this one may sound kind of wierd, but I keep randomly getting the
sound from movie ads played through my speakers. The other day I got
an ad for Elf, then Matrix Revolutions, and I just got another one for
some other movie, but my speakers were turned down too low to hear it.
Is this some kind of spyware or worm? I am on a college campus
network and am probably exposed to tons of worms, I get attack alerts
from my Notron Firewall almost every day. I have acutally talked to a
couple of other people in my dorm who have the same problem, does
anyone know what this is from and how to stop it? Thanks in advance
    for any help.

    Keri,

Do you know what programs are running when this happens?

You might want to try looking for spyware. SWI Forums would be a good
place to start. You'll install and run Spybot S&D, then HijackThis
(both free). Start here for instructions:
    http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187

Consider hardening your browser. Try these browser security analysis
    websites:
    http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/
    http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/sid-5...31e3/index.php
    https://testzone.secunia.com/browser_checker/

A port monitor would help you identify the process playing the audio -
or at least getting the data from the network (assuming that's where
    its coming from).

Start with Port Explorer (free) from
    http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexpl....php?page=home
Port Explorer will show the packets as they come to your computer, and
tell you what program is reading them, and where they're coming from.
Once you identify the program, Process Explorer (also free) from
http://www.sysinternals.com will tell you what modules are in a given
program, and who wrote the modules.

Did you install anything to get on your college campus network? I
wonder if your college is selling ad time based upon providing
internet connectivity. A creepy thought but maybe it finances the
    internet connectivity.

Keep in touch please - it would be interesting to hear what you find
    out.

    Cheers,

    Chuck

I noticed something similar recently. In my case, it turned out
that I had AOL's Instant Messenger program open, and it was
showing little ads, along with the sound, for a couple of movies.
I changed AIM's preferences to prevent displaying of the ads,
though I'm sorry to say I don't remember exactly what I had to do to
    shut them off.

    Chuck,

Thanks for the info, I have already installed and run both Spybot and
AdAware, and they dont show me anything. I will look into the port
explorer and get back to you if I find anything. Thanks again.
