You seem to do a very good job of punishing yourself by reading and
replying to all these top posters, little fairy nerd.

Did you recently update or install the RealOne Player? If you visit
Spybot's forums, you'll see my post noting the same exact problem. All
except one poster noted that they had updated or installed the RealOne
Player (and the one that says they changed nothing might be the typical
user that claims nothing changed when they know they changed something
or are just unaware of the change).

I have even uninstalled SpyBot, cleaned out the registry (lots of crap
gets left behind, including seven filetype associations, so Spybot has a
"dirty" uninstall) and remnant directories and files, and then did a
fresh install which was after the RealOne Player update. Didn't help.
Spybot is apparently far too sensitive to some registry setup which
aren't even its own registry entries. I suppose the Real might sliding
in a new spyware or other payload that disables Spybot but then Ad-Aware
continues to work okay. If the covert payload were to kill Spybot then
you'd think they'd hit the other anti-spyware products, too.

Somewhere the RealOne Player update/install stepped on something that
Spybot uses and which is not removed on an uninstall and/or stepped back
on by its install. Nothing is running that is for the RealOne Player so
it's not that it is stealing or overwriting something that the SpyBot
install might setup. So until the author figures out how to fix the
screwup, it seems Spybot becomes permanently disabled by a RealOne
Player update/install. So I uninstalled Spybot again, did all the
cleanup again after its dirty uninstall, and have to rely on Ad-Aware
until Spybot gets fixed. I could revert to a prior disk image except
that I just made a huge number of updates for lots of software and
RealOne Player was one of them. I don't want to go through all the
updates again and usually Ad-Aware and Spybot are equivalent in what
    they detect.
