If you're blocking Microsoft in your firewall -- using one of my Kerio
rules files or something -- just uncheck or deactivate the rules
pertaining to Microsoft. You may also need to deactivate any Akamai
    rules if you have any.

If you disabled ActiveX in your Internet Zone, leave it off. If not,
disable everything having to do with ActiveX in the Security panel of
your Internet Options menu. Place the following line in the Sites item
    for your Trusted Zone
    *.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If you are using a HOSTS file, DNSKong, or set up your browser to use
a proxy like Proxomitron, make sure you remove any entries referring
    to "microsoft".

sponge, thanks for the ideas. however, windowsupdate is already a
'trusted site' and i couldn't find anything in the hosts file that
would block my access. please allow me to clarify this a bit: i am
able to actually connect to windows update, but i get the following
    message:

    ____

    Access Denied

Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to
download and install updates on your computer.
    ____

i remember toggling some setting *somehwere, possibly in the win xp
gpe?, but i can't recall what or where. i guess thats what i get for
    becoming *too paranoid huh?

any ideas on where else i might take a look?

thanks again to all of you for your inputs.

just a follow-up to say that i finally figured it out. i did have it
disabled in the group policy settings. i have re-enabled it, and all
is now just fine. thanks again for all your responses.
