Upgrading directX to v9 in Win98SE?

I currently have DirectX v8.0 (4.08.00.0400). I've just dl a web
install file from this page:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...dxwebsetup.exe.

Was wondering, though, if there were issues with directX 9 and Win98SE
and what to do to avoid them? Also, are directX 9 codecs dangerous in
any way (spyware, etc.) the way WMP9 is? Any DRM, or spyware or other
issues that this installs? or are the straight codecs okay?

Pls advise and thanks. Hopefully will be able to play that AVI file.

A smooth installation, and no subsequent problems, on my Win98SE
machine.

But there can always be issues with anything involving Microsoft, so
YMMV.

If you own a factory-built system (Gateway, Dell, etc.) check your system
makers website for compatibility with DX9.
If you have a "home-built" system, then track down the corresponding
websites for your hardware (video, sound, etc.) to find out if they will
work with DX9.
Of course, if you have a recent, and reliable back-up of your HD, then cross
your fingers and go-for-it.

Darn, that's what I was worried about. I installed the DirectX9 and
_still_ the avi files doesn't play. Now it's not fully dl yet, but
that's the problem, too. It's a large file and will still take
several hours even though I have internet cable. Drat this whole
issue.

I guess I'll just have to wipe/reinstall my OS sooner than I thought
although I've been trying to get away from that as still too much to
burn as backup before doing that.

Drat all that DRM stuff anyway.

Seems to be ok - and it would appear to be 9.0b (patched for exploit
issue - you DON'T want to dig up an old 9.0/9.0a and have to do the
job twice)

There are reports of some adverse interaction with some video capture
/ TV cards or VIVO- type functions.

You may prefer to download the offline version

So you do not need to be online to install it.

If DirectX9 does not see a DX7 or better (4.12.xxxx) display driver,
it may demand that you get the full (SDK version) Reference
Rasteriser, the first time a program attempts to call Direct3D.

There may be better ways to obtain the FULL Reference Rasteriser -
this is rather large!

To be honest, if you have to use 100% software DX9 emulation, the
results will be 100% accurate, but 1000% SLOW!

With DX9 drivers over a DX6 card (eg. Latest Detonators on a Nvidia
TNT or TNT2) - it wouldn't be much better, but the drivers will use
whatever the limited hardware can do, to assist the software
emulation, with some features mocked up using the hardware, some
software emulated, and some simply unavailable.
