Is SpyBot S&D 1.2 still being updated? The last update that I downloaded was
dated Sept 13. Since that time, when checking for updates the program says "No
newer updates available". I've checked their web site and version 1.2 is still
available for download. I uninstalled then re-installed SpyBot S&D 1.2. Then
when checking for updates the program reported that an update was available. I
downloaded the update and it is dated Sept 13. I've had 2 updates from
Ad-Aware since Sep 13.

When I try to search for updates, SpyBot 1.2 doesn't find any (i.e., no
newer updates). My last update was also back on September 13. I have
disabled the firewall and still no updates. Maybe a host along my route
is interferring with the updates. My firewall shows the update
connecting to 212.227.118.106 (kundenserver.de) and a traceroute gets
there okay. The hosts it goes through were:

There sure is a lot of bouncing around inside Sprint. Maybe Chuck goes
through a host that I also go through. Maybe v1.2 of SpyBot is trying
to connect to the wrong host for updates, or that host (212.227.118.106)
is no longer profferring updates and a different host needs to be used.
Robin shows connections to studserver.uni-dortmund.de and
security.kolla.de but my firewall never received connect requests to
those hosts from SpyBot.
I went to http://www.safer-networking.org/ (which is also where I get
redirected when using http://security.kolla.de/). and it shows
2003-09-13 as the latest available update. So maybe there really hasn't
been an update in all that time. I had uninstalled Ad-Aware since
SpyBot was doing everything that Ad-Aware did, but if Ad-Aware has had
updates since then, and since these products usually encompass the same
threats, I guess that I'll have to reinstall Ad-Aware. I know of no way
to do a compare of what threats SpyBot detects and those that Ad-Aware
detects; it's not like they provide tools to compare the latest
available signature downloads.
Don't know what you're downloading - the last update according to the SS&D
website is 13/09/03

I've been downloading beta includes as well as the normal ones. I have it
on the best authority that the beta includes are over 90% as reliable as
the final ones.
To download them I have set my Web Update to 'Display also available beta
versions'.

There's a public and Beta update due out any day.
If you want to detect the Beta releases, you need to set SpyBot to read those on web
update - the Beta do false-flag though.

Thanks for the reply. I know about downloading bete releases. I'll wait 'til
the bugs are worked out. I wonder how many of those who download the beta
files are really testing for possible problems. I hope all, but I doubt it.

What difference does that make? The more a beta version is used, the
better chance there is of bugs being found, whatever the motivation of
the users.
I've been using 1.2 beta for, I think, as long as it's been available,
and with no problems to report. What's your problem with that?

There appears to be no drawback to the use of beta releases of SpyBot
software. Their betas are as good as others' final releases [grin].
