How I removed AdWare and SpyWare from my PC

Two weeks ago I made the mistake of downloading "GroksterPRO" - it
installed mountains of Adware and Spyware on my PC. I provide this
account of how I finally rid my PC of this trashware...

Initially, I used the free versions of Ad-Aware & Spybot Search and
    Destroy.
    Ad-Aware...
    http://www.lavasoft.de
    Spybot Search and Destroy...
    http://security.kolla.de
Both found and removed much of the Adware and Spyware. HOWEVER, each
time I rebooted, within a few minutes, I realized that this scumware
from Grokster was getting re-installed on my machine. So I'd run
Ad-Aware and Spybot again, then reboot, and again it would somehow get
reinstalled. So, someone pointed me to "HouseCall", the web-based
    Virus/Trojan scanner...
    http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
It found about 3 different Trojans but it indicated that it could not
delete them since they were in use. Unfortunately I could not delete
them myself, even in Windows safe mode. So I found this handy program
called DelLater which deletes files (which are in-use) simply by tagging
them for deletion upon the next Windows bootup...
    http://miataru.computing.net/securit...orum/6454.html
    or go to...
    http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=dellater
    ----
As a great general reference, a list of common Adware and Spyware is
    talked about at:
    http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite
NOTE: This site also gives manual removal instructions of Spyware/Adware
which may be infecting your PC (very imporant for when programs like
AdAware and Spybot fail to remove this sh*t).
Also, if you see something in your task manager (ie. clicking on
CTRL-ALT-DEL) that you've never seen before, you should search USENET to
see if someone else has "reported" this "thing"...then see what they
    said about it...
    http://groups.google.com/

So... keep running Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Housecall over and over until
your system is clean, and use the DelLater utility (referenced above) to
delete any Trojans which can't be normally deleted since they are
    in-use.

And... another great online Adware/Spyware checker (with fixes) is at:
    http://auhma.org/a/noads.htm
NOTE: You need to first disable ad blocking in Zone Alarm 3.x (if you
use it) or any ad blocking software that uses Java Scripting since the
above URL uses Java Scripting. Read this posting too for even more
    info...

Finally, although it didn't work for me, you may also want to try:

    Excuse the top post.

I use WinPatrol to let me know when things want to install in Startup or
    WinXP Run/Runonce registry.
    http://www.winpatrol.com
I also use Mike Lin's Startup Control panel to see what is starting.
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Startup Monitor could also be used but it duplicates the function in
    WinPatrol.

    ??? !!!

Will you *please* make up your ****ing mind what your name is,
    you stupid prat?

Today it's "Dave Moore". On the 29th October, in the thread
"Help - Anyone download Grokster Lately?", it was "Dillon
McCormick", and an hour before that, in thread "GroksterPRO is
NOT Adfree" it was "Eric Davis".

Stop Press - today, in the first of the threads mentioned above,
your name is suddenly "Paul B."!

You fell for an obvious scam - and paid money for it!

You are an idiot. No matter WHICH name you go by.

Mike Lin has some good stuff, but I like Brad Stower's Startup Manager
    better.
    http://f2.org/archive/software/startupmgr.html

Also, there's a free little utility out there called ProPort that monitors
registry entries and lets you cancel or accept them 'on-the-fly'. It also
catches trojans that ZA and NAV don't pick up.
