AdAware Folder Scanning Question

Well actually there was a lot to sift through there not really finding the
answer I was looking for. I just was curious what specific folders were
most likely to contain spyware components/files besides Program Files. I
think I'm pretty squared away though. The only thing I really have ever
found was tracking cookies which I like to keep on top of and block.

I like to check out new programs all the time and I think you have posted
update info on Spyware Blaster which I have never used or looked at before.
What others do you use besides AdAware, Spybot S&D, and HijackThis?

Not a program but a function of Windows maybe even the basic TCP/IP protocol

Thanks, I've used a HOSTS file in the past, but don't care for all the extra
clutter included in bundled updated hosts files that I think Mike puts out.
Usually filled with sites or ad servers I never see. I usually just enter
pesky or persistent tracking cookies in the Restricted Zone, which is only a
couple a month. I also didn't care for seeing, "The page could not be
displayed blah blah blah", all over the web page where ads would normally
be. I use AdMuncher which just leaves them basically blank. Unless I could
be convinced why I would want to use a hosts file, I am content for now.

Spyware is more likely to be Registry resident than anywhere else but notalways.
You can override your automatic cookie handling in IE by blocking first and third party.
SpyBot probably does a better job at the "tracking" stuff than Ad-aware [opinion]...

What else to I use other than what you mention, Mike Burgess' HOSTS

filters DNS lookups through a filter, or HOSTS file.

AdShield I also run but it no longer available in freeware, but it is still public domain
so I'll give you a link and a block list link for you to try, at your option.

I save some projects or tasks for rainy days, and since many rainy days are
soon to come, I may test out a few different options/programs. Being a
member of the support team on an Aussie tech help site, I was given a
license for AdShield, but never bothered installing it. Maybe I'll test it
out tomorrow. I don't recall seeing many, if any, tracking cookies detected
with Spybot for the longest time. Maybe I oughta have a peek at my settings
again the next time an update is available. Thanks.
