Update for my ghetto wireless access

Well I'm pretty close to wrapping up my wireless access/remote client setup. previously it was a linksys wrt54g flashed with dd-wrt in client mode and bungee corded to the railing on the ship with a plastic bag over it to keep in dry. I've made some changes since then.

I took the circuit board out of the wrt box and mounted it inside a pelican case with an 8dbi gain antenna mounted on one side and a waterproof wire fitting on the other. Just have to come up with a better POE (power over ethernet) solution (previous one was just a wall wart cut in the middle and spliced into the cat 5e then broke out on the other end. I'm going to try and make something a little more elegant for this project. Anyway it's turning out quite nice and the pelican case is definitely a nice touch since it was only $40 and many online wireless vendors were asking 2 or 3 times that for a waterproof enclosure.

The pictures are from my crappy phone, but you can get the idea.

I got to check out similar setups that a friend helps put together for the wireless community over here. Good job! Don't forget to ground the thing for lightning.

A local Electronics Supply Store Called Frigid North. It's kind of like a Radio Shack on steriods and about 10 times the size.

The price of the box I used is listed as approx $42 but if you work for a company that has an account there they will give you a discount even if you are buying items for personal use.

Given my most recent experiance with RS Im going to just try to remember a better time... one where the people inside at least had a hint of knowledge and the stores stocked more then some cheap RC cars, overpriced cheap cell phones, and some other junk that is generally overpriced and the people working there know less then whats on the side of the box.

lol, yeah 4 bucks for one led is outrageous when you can buy them by the 100's for pennies each.

The last two times I visited a radio shack, they were going out of business.

The last one I was in, the manager handed me one of their big sacks and said it was $10 for all I could put in it. I bought two bags and felt I got a good deal.
