    ICQ

My ICQ .99b Beta version seems to have stopped working. ICQ support
recommends getting a newer version. How bad are they as far as spyware
    and ads?

I installed Miranda-IM and that seems to connect to the ICQ server
okay. Is anyone here using it? Any comments?

I use Miranda. It works well for me. Love the weather plugin
You can also try Gaim, which is also open-source. Probably a bit more
stable than Miranda, but less features

Pretty awful -- i.e., "completely unacceptable", in my book.

Not familiar with that one. Others whose judgement I trust have had good
    things to say about Trillian:

but I've not used it myself.
