    Sounds like you have your POP settings wrong in OE. Alternatively your ISP
    doesn't provide POP service - in which case change your ISP.

    A simple call to tech support should do it. Some ISPs - notably AOL and
    lower priced service ie NET-Zero - do not provide POP service, so you cannot
    use OE. You have to use their online interface to check your email. Never
    a good idea for exactly the reasons you have seen.

    Most ISPs do provide POP and a very few also provide IMAP, though that is
    more common if you have your own server.

    Assuming that you do in fact have POP, the most common error I have seen is
    entering mail.myisp.com instead of mail.myisp.net. Tech support will tell
    you exactly which and usually will walk you through the setup wizard.
