That is understandable!

But, if you hang around the wonderful world of malware for any length of time, you'll find that the "big boys" are dreadfully slow in addressing some of the more popular and ever-mutating threats. This is especially true for the Vundo family of trojans (which, if you do not update your Java, you may soon become acquainted with), Smitfraud, and your baddie, Wareout.
For each of those, there is a "generic tool" devised by hotshots in the anti-malware community that is FAR preferable to and more effective than anything else!!
An example of one of these GREAT tools that has been used countless times is here---> Dave's World. Check it out!



Anyhoo, until Judy checks back, I suggest doing the following:


FIRST:
You should definitely Update your Java here ---> http://www.java.com/en
-Then, look in Add/Remove Programs and Remove ALL traces of all older Java versions! If you do not uninstall ALL older versions, you may remain at risk for a number of baddies such as Vundo.

THEN:
--- Download ATF-Cleaner.exe by Atribune to your Desktop.
-- Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
-- Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
-- Click Empty Selected > OK > EXIT
This will flush the Java Cache, among other things.

Follow EACH AND EVERY STEP that PP has listed. And FYI, many of those" big-brand anti-spyware" only do two things...charge you an arm and a leg and then rip you off with false positives and adding spyware of their own. If it is a good program, we recommend it...big or small. A good number of the fixes we use here all the time were created by small time folks with big time brains who just want to help folks and not rip them off. You don't need a fancy package to work well.

WOW! full price anti-spyware inserts it's own spyware! omg, how do they get away with that!

The dilema most average PC users like me face, i think stems from the fact we were happily surfing about, went to a site saying "hey click here, this is great", and BLAM!, we get stung with a myriad of trojans / malware / baddies.
Perhaps this leaves average PC users like me very sceptical of all future online promises, and we look for the most guarentees / certificates / mainstream-comfort of a popular and well known brand name, in which to trust our PC security... (imo).

I do agree tho, Big = slow and cumbersome. And I really appreciate the good will from both; a) these crazy dudes making up specific little programs which work. And b) from both you guys - you are amazing! (and amazingly patient, while I stumble around in this new territory!)

The big / small topic, reminds me of getting my car serviced; the large main-dealership will charge £300 for a service (and often mess it up!), yet a small independant garage will do the same / or better job for £130.

Anyway, back to the techy stuff... :-)



I ran the ATF-Cleaner, selected all, and cleared loads of junk out.

The C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMXAS.EXE is not there anymore because a recent EWIDO scan (AVG spyware 7.5) identified it and quarantined it.

Thank you for informing me Java needed updating. I was not aware of this, (I've got used to software checking for updates automatically). Java.com now verified I have the latest version. Woo! I deleted an old Java 2 in control panel Add / Remove Programs, as you said.

Upon re-checking windows Add / Remove Programs, I noticed a new one I am not familiar with: "Confidence Online(tm) for Web Applications" This might be symantic? but I didn't ask for it to be there... it wouldn't be a problem if I removed it, will it?




Earlier PP mentioned this:

This is interesting because EWIDO found a file stored as a system restore file.

How would I go about clearing out old system-restore information? or is this something unadvisable to do?

Hi Sierra,

Your best bet is to look at my two Sticky Posts at the top of the Forum.

You'll find instructions on how to flush Restore Points (and yes, doing that now is a good idea) as well as some preventative measures that you can take.

And, you're right - don't believe all the promises you see on the net for this or that program. Judy is correct - some of the less reputable products come with their own baddies..... (see my link to Spyware Warrior's Rogue Product list in my Protect Yourself Sticky Post)

I stand by the ones I have listed in the StickyPosts (many are FREE!!).

I will butt out now so Judy won't have to contend with me.

For starters on your unknown program in Add/Remove
"Confidence Online(tm) for Web Applications"
I am having some trouble getting definitive answers about it. Why would you think it was Symantec? I don't see any Symantec programs in your various logs.
Just click on the entry, don't remove it, just highlight it and see if there is a date there where it was supposedly last used. Also, on some applications there is an option in the Add/Remove listing to click for more info. You might try that and see if the option is there, if so, see what info you can find. But do check the date, that might give us a time frame at least to work with on it.
I will go through your log shortly, and give a recommendation on programs you can disable at start and the like. So far, quickly I don't see a nasty but let me look closer.

As for a donation, I suggest you install SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
It is one of the few tools I consider to be indispensable. I list it in my Linky below. It uses no system resources and blocks a ton of baddies!
Give it a whirl and remember to keep it updated (they add new baddies to the database regularly).

I'm sure its makers would welcome a donation!
