Download, update and then run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. They
are both free. Run them both. Be sure you update them first - and don't
forget to read the user's manual, especially for Spybot. This question

NEVER NEVER NEVER respond in any way - most especially by email - to these

Sorry about the html, I didn't check it before I sent it.

I have AdAware which I use at least every night and I've just downloaded the
    Spybot.

So far I've haven't gotten any spam from using the contact on the pop-up but
I guess I'm just lucky, I'm sure it'll arrive soon!

    Thanks for the reply.

Might be a good idea to get HijackThis, run it and post the log.

I installed a program today called TechfactsXP that checks and cleans the
registry, among other things, is the same as the HijackThis program? Would
I be able to find the same things?

I used the Spybot program and (I'm not kidding here) as soon as I'd finished
using it and closed the program, up popped the ad! If the TechfactsXP is
the same as HijackThis, could I send in a screen capture or something
    similar from that?

Never seen anyone recommend TechFacts XP here or in alt.computer.security.
Hijack This has a strong and devoted following - and it is free too.

Not even close. The reason why people always recommend hijackthis is
because it's specially designed to create a concise readable log that
detect pests. It's become the standard used by experts to help others, so
most people who can help you are used to reading such logs.

Thanks Aaron. I have the page bookmarked so I'll go and get it now. Its
late here so I might be able to post or whatever again until morning.

I appreciate the help that your giving me.

I was on the XP news group and saw someone else who is having the same
problem and I've also posted there as they have suggested a different
solution. I hope this is okay as I really want to try all available options
in getting rid of this problem.

    Thanks again.

I've taken a look, at your posting and i can tell you most probably ,
TechfactsXP won't solve the problem for you , since it's just removes
temporary files, TIF, various MRU files/ tracks etc.

Regcleaners also won't solve the problem, becuase it looks for registry
files that are not being or wont be in use. For example, during a
uninstall, some registry entries might have being left over even though the
supporting files that go with the registry entry are no longer there.
REgistry cleaning programs will remove those.

If your problems are spyware or adware related, you can bet those registry
    files are active!

Spybot S&D and/or adaware might solve the problem since they target such
nasties specifically (by looking at registry entries among other things),
but in certain rare cases, they won't. This is where hijackthis comes in.

BTW The people at spywareinfo are very skilled and they are more competent
(in terms of removing spyware/adware) then the people at the xp newsgroup

    Hi NiC,

So you run XP... did you think of disabling your "restore points"
before you executed the tips you got at the HiJackThis forum? If not...
your "clever" OS might restored the culprit again from the saved
    information!

I agree with MTO on ZA (or any other firewall); one thing the MBLAST
debacle should have taught us: Even those on DUN connections should
have a firewall present when connecting to the Internet! I've seen
before my very eyes how fast an "open" system (running XP-home BTW) was
infected! Within seconds the system had to be cured again, and again...
etc. It was only because I could break through this "devious circle"
and install a firewall from a tools CD I have, that I could desinfect
that system and finally execute the MS patch for it! In short: A
firewall is a necessary tool for ALL accessing the Internet!!!

    Dick
