Free Surfer, which I use, has an option to prevent its System Tray
icon from appearing. It's a great popup blocker too - it works well.

I hope this address is still current (I don't have a cable modem). If
not, just look in Google for Free Surfer and you'll find it quickly
    enough.

It is however VERY resource hungy....So depending on your system you
may want to consider something else

PopupManager is what I'm trying now, so far, (3 days), so good and it
don't sit in the tray. http://www.endpopups.com/index.html

I'm starting to notice that myself, a few days down the road, and yeah
    it does get irritating.

Its a trade off as to whats more annoying, that or having Free Surfer
eat a minimum of 20meg of RAM...it a noticable hit to my system and I
would imagine crippling for an older/slower one.
