No Realmedia anything is spyware free - even if you pay for it. The
company's entire business model is based on collecting and selling user
data. Has been since the very day they came online. If you think for half
a second that they suddenly got religion because of user concern over
spyware I know a nice bridge down in Brooklyn I'll be happy to sell you.
That data is worth FAR too much $$$$ to give up.

Recently I went looking for an mp3 player myself. Winamp was one of the
ones that I investigated. What I found that others had written disturbed me
enough that I didn't bother with WinAmp. Google up "WinAmp + spyware" and
    make your own judgement.

Read through a couple of the search results pages and you'll see more than
that. I scanned through about 10 pages of results.

I've seen lots of "free" programs come down the pike. Once they decide that
the only way to make $$ is to sell userdata that have collected or to serve
up ads or to package their product along with Gator and company, they are
forever more untrustworthy. Once a ***** always a ***** as the saying goes.

I don't want that crap on my machine.

Do yourself a favor and read through a google search and judge for yourself
before making a decision. Juergen states clearly that he hasn't bothered to
    upgrade since WinAmp 2.

Winamp is not spyware. The only information it sends to anyone is
information *you* let it, and it asks your permission during the
installation process. If you say no, it sends no data, and the winamp
agent is easily disabled if you're paranoid.

Don't take my word for it though. Install a firewall and see if it ever
makes an unrequested connection, or simply tell it you have no internet
    connection.

You can also search the online spyware databases, such as:
    http://www.spywareguide.com/
    http://www.spychecker.com/home.html

    Or read previous discussions:
Winamp has also been discussed at length on the grc.com newsgroups,
    particularly grc.spyware.

Pick your poison, I run v2.81 - no Net access - regardless of any existing
privacy statement and I never even looked.

Learn how to Google. "Winamp Spyware" is NOT "WinAmp + spyware" nor
"Spyware + WinAmp" nor "Spyware search within result WinAmp."
