I hope you still are around and will read this...
First of all, posting HTML in a usenet News Group (NG) is considered
being rude in itself.
About the way it was delivered you can debate at nauseum, however...
you'll never know what the original thoughts were and the intended
intonation with which MTO wrote his reply to you; the same problem
exists for written letters and eMail btw.
_Whatever_ is signaling (and some newsreader programs actually show it
that way) the text as being underlined, *whatever* is bold and
/whatever/ is italic...
