    outlook express changed

When I opened my outlook express this morning a got a message saying
my OE exe file had been changed. PCcillin says the new host name is
ads.as4x.tmcs.net. Any body have any ideas? I'm not showing any
viruses. I have been having a lot of problems since installing Sygate
    firewall.

Probably my #1 reason to recommend against Norton is experience. First,
every time that I have tried a Norton product - from Win95 on - I have ended
up with a total mess, once having to literally wipe the drive to restore
    things.

Second, for many years I've run a large, pretty high traffic website - which
means that the site email is in thousands of Windows address book. Judging
just by my newsletter subscriptions over the years I would guesstimate well
over 30K. For more than 5 years now every single day that address has
received at least 50 email viruses. Every single virus that propagates by
email shows on my "doorstep" within 24 hours of discovery and often much
sooner. I always send out a little note re the virus discovery to whomever
I received it from and often they write back asking for advice/help.
Invariably they either do not have an antivirus installed at all or far more
    commonly, are dependent upon Norton.

Additionally, I have a number of clients for whom I make housecalls to deal
with computer/software problems. Every single time that I have found one of
them to be infected with a virus they have been running Norton - usually the
av that came with the machine. Those clients who didn't get av software
with their machine and thus ask for advice have never had a problem.

You may ask me. Norton installs **** all over your machine: auto
updates, installers, and other crap. IOW, it's messy, and it expects
to be able to phone home w/out your permission. Try getting it all
off sometime, and you'll see what I mean.

    It's also BIG.

I've been using Norton AV for years now with little trouble. Anyone
using an OEM version is likely not paying attention to their AV
situation. Norton is a good product, but their are other good AV
products out there. Some people feel that it is a bloated program. To
sell the product Norton tries to do too much. It is none the less a
    very good AV program

Sybase Personal Firewall is an excellent firewall. It is much more
    reliable than Zone Alarm.

AdAware6 I have found to be almost useless. It takes forever to run and
finds very little. Spybot Search & Destroy 1.2 is a far more effective
    weapon against spy ware intrusions.

    Hi James,

Is the observation in your final paragraph based on the 181 build or
previous ones... I have seen the 181 build in action and it was really
fast! I use both of them, in tandem... and am a very happy camper (no
    spyware whatsoever).

Regarding Norton AV, up until the whole DRM debacle at Symantec started
I used their software. Heavy (though not as heavy as McAffee) on
    resources, but very reliable!

    Regards
    Dick

Perhaps - if it will run. I have tried it 3X, most recently about 3 weeks
ago. It simply will not run on my machine. Installs just fine, but then I
cannot connect to the internet at all, ever. Yes I have checked all the
settings everywhere. Uninstall it and things work just fine. Meanwhile I
have been using ZA for years now and have never had a thing to complain
    about.

I don't know the build # for Adware6. It has been a few months since I
last had this program. It may be that later builds are faster.

If ZA works for you and Sybase dosen't then I am sure you will be happy
witb Zone Alarm. There is no one size fits all software.
