    Real Alternative

Perusing one of the other groups I came across this alternative for
Real Player, called, oddly enough, RealAlternative. Supposed to be
spyware and adware free and is freeware.

    Check out http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...fid=1054136293
read the reviews. Does most of the stuff Real Player does including
    play rm files.

This would be wonderful if it worked as, I still run into .rm files and such
that I just skip, since I refuse to let realplayer pollute my machine with
worthless and hazardous junk! However, my experience with realplayer and
its associated problems has so turned me off, I won't even let anything on
my machine that seems related--will sit back and let the braver people
    explore this one first!

    Warmest regards,
    John Smith

I can't answer for TTBoy, but I do believe version 9 is M$ spyware. I
have version 7 and it tries to report home on occasion. I think 9 may
have the EULA that tells you it is pro- "digital rights management."

Presumably this would allow them to snoop your files for copy write
    works? Don't know . . . just sounds ominous.

I just got a new puter with XP and Media Player installed. How do I get MP
un installed? I can't find any uninstall anywhere.
What other things should I be removeing or turning of in XP.
    Thanks

    Re: Real Alternative

Someone else will probably answer your question better, since I use
'doze 98. There's a tag for it in the control panel under add/remove
programs in 98 makes Windows media player go away if you want.

I have the version 7 on but have the firewall configured so it can't
phone home. It does keep a file list in the registry of everything I
    open in media player.

I use Irfanview for all the graphics and video, and Winamp for sound
files. I'm not sure if Irfanview has all the codecs it needs or is
"borrowing" some from Windows Media Player - but it works, so I
    stopped messing with it.

Neither WinAmp or Irfanview are spyware, and both are freeware.
Irfanview has to have an extra package of codecs downloaded for it to
play media files, and not all media files will play by double clicking
    - the ones that don't will work by opening them from the Irfanview
media player window (so I probably have the file associations screwed
    up).

That's where I started but there is nothing in control panel add/remove for
    it.?????

Instant Messenger - in a VERY big way, since it phones home somewhere just
about every two minutes. I did see instructions recently for editing the
registry in such a way as to be able to uninstall those things, but I really
don't want to mess around with the XP and have to reinstall it at 3 am so I
settled for blocking net access to those programs (and don't forget the
    components!) in Zone Alarm.

    Re: Real Alternative

Could I be so bold to ask what possible use this has? After all "who
cares what you do with your own computer?"

Seems to this user that if you believe Real Player is so bad, your
energy would be better spent educating others rather than denigrating
    them.

Then too, who's seeking your approval? Please add me to your kill
    file.
