Just an update for those looking for a follow-up:

No success yet, haven't resorted to a hard drive reformat (I went away
on vacation for a couple weeks, and knew it shoouldn't be attempted
until my return).

SpyBot S&D & Norton continue to find nothing, AdAware just found an
Alexa thang in my registry.

Whatever it was, was idle a couple of days ago (making me think it
went away all by itself...) but returned yesterday.

An update:

(The issue was, a blank line in my task manager which cannot be
highlighted, and so the program couldn't be ended; only seems to occur
when browsers are up. Also see a large number of bytes on the outflow
when I visit a new web page. Scans through Norton, SpyBotS&D, AdAware
show nothing, nor does Process Explore.)

My next step was to run hijackthis.exe and post the results in a forum
at spywareinfo.com.

Nothing suspicious occurred in those runs (a request was made that I
send two files in for review, but they were determined benign. No
solution yet, still fearing a hard drive reconfiguration.
