    Pop Ups

    Hi Group...

Over the past two days I have been hit by 5 pop ups that look like grey
dialog boxes.. the one I can remember was advertising that a new web-site
"byebyeads" or something can stop these pop up ads. There does seem to be a
reference to them coming from a messenger service. Prior to yesterday I have
    never experienced one of these.

They don't pop up immediately but if I stay on a site for some time one will
    appear?

Ad-aware tells me my machine is clean but I feel like I'm being targeted?

    Anyone else experiencing these?

    Regards

The above post was a bit lazy of me... I've since found how to disable
windows messenger service BUT I am still puzzled as to why it has suddenly
    started operating?

Anyway.. here's what I did to disable the messenger service:
1.. Click Start button on your toolbar.
    2.. Click Run...
3.. Enter "Services.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
4.. Browse the list till you find "Messenger" in Name column
5.. Right click and click "Stop" on the pop up menu. That is not all. If
you don't want the service to start the next time you start your computer,
    continue with the following steps:
6.. Double click it. The Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box
    comes out.
7.. Choose "Disable" in "Startup type" drop down box.
    8.. Click OK.
If I've done the wrong thing will someone be kind enough to point me in the
    right direction

Not sure about that... they've stopped now I've disabled the messenger
    service...

But you're right about that Firewall... I haven't checked the Shields Up
(nanoprobe) web-site https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 since installed XP
(with it's supposedly built in "warmwall") some time ago... and guess
what... down to the firewall shop I go
