Yeah, I was trying to get some smoother 3d out of my system so I got a radeon agp card, had to do a fresh instal with whql chipset drivers, minus the gart and audio driver for nforce2 then install dx9.0b Then install the chipset audio processors ac97 drivers I think it's alc650 chip, with the alc homepage download I get less cpu usage for audio, little boost for the nforce2, every little bit helps.. So once that was all over I was finally getting to install the graphics drivers but everytime it finished installing the thing would lock up and give me protection faults, then I found out I have to limmit the pagefile and vcache for windows "no unified memory archetecture" Once I had vcache settings to about 30% of total system ram It finally loaded without locking up. This is because of how ****ty memory management is on 9x.. the agp addressable range is in the same arena as windows bloated filecache.. So yeah then I tried installing the drivers for the card, then omega drivers, and was getting some pretty smooth graphics, better than any other card I had in the system except certain progs that were built for the voodoo3 3000.. So yeah, then I tried my card in my brothers computer that's running 2.43ghz and the score went from my computers 25000+ aquamarks at 2.1GHZ to 54000+ aquamarks, only difference was the processor speed on his computer and windows xp.

Even overclocking the 9x machine to 2.1Ghz didn't get scores any higher
than about 25430 or so, this doesn't even compare to the stock CPU settings 1.8ghz on windows xp I'm getting a little over 44000.

Everything is soo much faster. Only problem I'm having is getting the OS buttoned up before It can go online... Too many holes....

Eh, that's why you put SP2 on a cd and install that...then do the rest of the updates...if you are quick about it you are fine with putting a "virgin" XP machine online. Just don't leave it open for an extended period of time (36 hours+)

the new hardware came with xp-pro sp2, so I guess I didn't need a streemlined disk. I was reading about that extended period of time. Microsoft say's the new survival time is now an average of 16 minutes before an unprotected OS gets owned just by plugging into a modem/broadband without any security.

I'm behind a natted router but still got a to-do list of things to help secure the OS. Might post it as a guide or something, it's pretty good stuff that requires reg editing, firewalls, antivirus, user acounts and other stuff to protect the registry. More than just installing ZA Adaware/spybot S&D. Haven't had the time to sit down and get into it so It's not online. I may only use the machine for photo's and printing. The new camera software, Canon Digital Professional required xp and so did doom3 and I think q4 but haven't got those yet. of course I'll use it for lotsa 3d fps, but it may never see the internet. I'm wondering if there's a way to make the activation thing disapear so I don't have to go online with it.

    Your kidding me, right?

Microsoft DOS? (MSDOS) It's basically a program based off the command prompt.

Yeah, that's understood. I know you can activate windows over the phone...and last time I did it, it was fully automated...

Now, the last news post, that's one of the many reasons I don't use IE. I use FF, AVG, Spybot, Adaware, occasionally HijackThis. But I also run RD ALL the time, and I haven't had an issue yet...
