What's the best way to reduce spam?
I've tried using message rules but it's not very effective. Rule used is,
delete when message body contains certain words.

That doesn't work, because most spam writers interrupt words with
nonsense html comments. This makes the words invisible to the filters,
but not to you, because the email program filters the html comments out.
I use mailwasher pro, with DNS blacklists activated, a few filters
(mainly for asian languages) and train it by marking for blacklists. It
is now simple to check for spam, and to delete it off the pop server
before it hits my Eudora (with Spamnix for added safety).
Mailwasher will also let you see the raw text, with all the gory html
remarks, and all headers, so it's easier for spam reporting.

Yep - mailwasher pro here also - little bit of training and it works like a
dream.

I've used Mailwasher but I'm having much greater success with POPFile -
currently 11 classification errors out of 944 messages (equiv. 98.83%
success) over 9 days. That's just over 800 spam messages reliably weeded
out.
Will these wash the spam out of the NGs too?

You have explained why: Mail is either POP or IMAP, news is NNTP; by default
these are completely different animals. It's as if you were trying to grind
your coffee in a meat grinder!
