Please provide the following:
~ HijackThis log file (see #3 on this sticky).
(please attach the entire file as a .txt document, do not copy/paste it)
~ When did the error start occuring (after installing X or uninstalling Y or running Z, etc.)
~ Are there any other errors or issues you noticed on this system?
~ When the error comes up, what options you have to click on, what happens after you click on any of the available options?
(screenshots would be best).
Someone will get back to you once you provide the information.

thanks for the response
I don't have internet on that machine, it is my grandson's.
the exact error is "crypt32.dll is linked to missing export file RCPTA.DLL:NDRClientCall2"
due to this error popping up each time, I can't extract anything from floppy or HD
I can't extract from the HD if it requires unzipping
when I atttempt to extract, it gives me the message and I can bypass it by clicking ok and it will open windows where I can utilize Works, etc that are already on the machine.
I know he (grandson) was deleting things to clear space for a game and deleted the 'shared programs' that I have been trying to rebuild the .dll s from my XP machine.
?????
Chris2, are you absolutely certain the name of this file is RCPTA.DLL?
I can find no reference to this .dll file anywhere BUT RPCRT4.DLL IS a legitimate file. rpcrt4.dll is the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) API, used by Windows applications for network and Internet communication.
What is the operating system on the affected machine?
Hmmm, it sounds like your grandson gave you your birthday gift a little too early this year!
From your last sentence, I believe you are using Windows XP. If so, is it Professional?
Are you able to run .exe files? IF you attached the self-extracting version of HijackThis to this thread, would you be able to download/save and run it?
Further more if this is an XP machine, can you do this to see if it found and replenished possibly deleted system files:
START > RUN > scf /scannow > OK (XP CD might be needed and also there is a space between sfc and /scannow).
Sorry, I can't seem to be able to attach .exe files, may be due to my 'Junior Member' status, may be Jholland could do it?

you are correct - old age and eyesight i guess
for TurcoLoco
the machine in question is windows 95 operating sys. I was attempting to rebuid from XP pro in last resort panic. I have a 98 boot and install disk but i get a "incorrect dos version" when I tried to format the HD on the IBM aptiva. then the other after that.
at this time I cannot open any exe files.
Hi Chris,
Sorry for the late reply as I was taken down by a flu just recently.
Anyhow, You have to forget about Windows XP and 98 related install disks, etc.
The version of DOS was changed even by Windows98 so even if booting to a Windows 98 boot disk worked (not sure since I have not used Windows95 for like ever), I don't believe you would be able to run any of the DOS commands or executables off of that boot disk.
I would strongly recommend re-install Windows95 on top of the existhing installation if you still have the CD or if you have a 98 CD then upgrading to Windows98 would be better if it was at all possible.
I am sorry I can't do a solid analysis or provide any concrete help as it has been a long time since I have used Windows98.![]()
If none of what I suggested is do-able for you then perhaps one of the other regulars could chip in.
Let us know.

try to boot the computer into safe mode by pressing the f8 key on boot up.
once there click on the msdos icon on the desktop
type the followig line:
scanreg /fix
reboot
Tor: win 95 uses dos 7.0, 98 uses dos 7.1, both very compatable for syntax.

The cause is most likely freshly installed software for a win nt based file system (win xp, 2000) that linked the non boot drives to the remote procedure call dll. if the registry edit does not solve the issue, torcolocos reinstall is the most likely fix. There is not much support around for windows 95 and 98 but you can try this link for more advice on DLL's
