    Privacy & Peer-to-Peer Progs

    OK.... this is getting serious.

Do any of you download MP3's using one (or more) of the peer-to-peer utilities available (Kazaa, WinMX, Direct Connect, LimeWire, etc)?

You must be aware that the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has begun a veritable pogrom against this practice. Though it all sounds, frankly, far-fetched, they claim to be targeting individual users, like you and me.

Obviously, a method they could use would be to identify the IP of the user (apparently quite visible on p2p betworks), trace it back to his/her ISP, and legally force the ISP to block such traffic; bar the user altogether, or give the name of the user to the RIAA.

My question is - is there ANY way to anonymise my IP while using one of the above utilities? I know how to use the mail-to-news system on Usenet (using the QuickSilver remailer); and I know how to use anonymous proxies while surfing the web (I use Proxomitron for this) .... but I'm stumped with the p2p angle.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or, better still, links to further information or tools? Thanks.

    No, it's rather laughable.

    No.

Heard of that. It must be their last hope to earn even more money.

'Anonymity' and 'Massive downloads of binaries' don't match.

I suggest you send CDs or even harddisks by postal mail.

Get better bandwidth mailing CD's anyway.

If you want to be anonymous, run a Freenet node, it's not perfect, it's
cumbersome, slow, and the last node is clearly visible -- but where you are,
who you are, and where people are getting the data from upsteam is invisible.

I believe Grokster has some basic forms of encryption that it uses -- but wont
    hide your IP.

Maybe you should consider using secure FTP and just giving passwords to you and
your friends that you want to be able to upload there? Plenty of good FTP
tools out there and they do the same thing.
