    Ad Blocking

    Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the correct group to post this in, but if it
isn't I'm sorry. I'd like to get rid of those annoying pop-up ads that you
see while surfing the internet. I'd really rather not have to purchase one
of those programs that do this for you unless that is the only way. I'm
hoping that someone in this group will know how to do this without
purchasing an ad-blocking program. Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Mark

I use the Proxomitron, their website seems to be down. You could try the new
google toolbar with popup blocker, but some people may tell you that google
spys on you, that I wouldn't know. http://toolbar.google.com/

I use the Google toolbar and have been for quite a while now. The spying
is only to gather stats on popularity on Web sites. This is configurable
and can be turned off. The pop-up blocker is in the beta release and
    works very well.

Proximatron is way too complicated but lots of people like it. The author
got upset at some criticism and has stopped support.

I prefer the HOSTS file method discussed in this forum where Proximatron is
    discussed also.

HOSTS and AdShield are my first line of defense against ads, malicious URL's and
    drive-by's.
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/adshield.htm

Freeware AdShield is *still* free for the taking, old version _but_ supports new
block file, http://www.fsd1.org/technology/download.asp [Look for the link].

Back that all up by running Ad-aware and SpyBot on a **regular** basis.

I have gator, and that's full of all that stuff. I'm not getting rid of
that so I guess I can't run the adware and spyware stuff.

    I like good ol' Webwasher.

    http://www.webwasher.com/client/down...tml?lang=de_EN

It's an outstanding proxy filter. I have Proxomitron, but it's not quite at the
    level this one is.

Download and install Mozilla. It is a very good browser, tabbed browsing
is great! And it has a very effective and configurable popup blocker built
    in. Finally, it's free

I believe some browsers have pop-up blocking built in, so you could get one
of those browsers. Also, since most browser spyware requires IE, as a side
effect of changing browsers, you'd have a more secure system.
