    Messenger Service

I have been getting a new type ( for me at any rate ) of pop-up
advertisement appearing on my Desktop. They are for the usual things -
weight loss etc. The heading appearing at the top blue bar is "
MESSENGER SERVICE " They have just been appearing in recent weeks.

I am always connected to the INTERNET but they come even though my web
    browser is switched off.

I use SYGATE Personal Firewall, Pop-UP Stopper, Ad-aware and Spybot so
am a bit concerned as to how they are reaching my desktop. I thought I
was pretty well covered. I can understand such adverts appearing when
you are viewing a Web site but less so when the computer is sitting, to
all extents and purposes, idle !

There may well be another program running that I have overlooked such as
connecting to my POP Server to download mail.

As I was typing this message up came a message saying " Your IP address
is being openly broadcast over the Internet" and suggesting I go to
WWW.PRIVACYSAVER.ORG I did that a few days ago and downloaded the
Pop-up program but still the messages come .

The only program running presently is my News Reader....any thoughts
would be welcome. Thanks - Ted

    May be direct advertiser

From the developer: "The newest technology in online marketing! We have
developed a software that will send your messages directly to the computer
screen of the people you wanted to see your advertising. Instantly! No more
waiting, no more email filters to fight, relays and proxies to find. Just
compose your message and you are ready to start your campaign. 85% of all
consumer computers are able to display the messages you are sending to them
    with this software."

You can desactivate the Windows Messenger Service.

Thanks to all who have replied. I appreciate your input. I have disabled
Windows Messenger Service so let us see what happens. Have tested my
Firewall against two different Web sites doing such things and get a
good report. The above Web sites are very interesting - hadn't seen them
    before.
