Pass it on..
In light of the KNOWN reasons to try and eradicate pests that are
harmfull to plants... There efforts are mainly to protect "agricultural production costs"
Certain County board reps say NO! to
county-wide crop-dusting for "light brown apple moth"
aka LBAM due to lack of long term effect studies of
"inert ingredients" and synthetic chemicals that
comprise the payload "pheromone"
Whatever the spelling and grammar
isn't..
The stuff is designed to attract the light brown apple
moth males to the scent bait. They are hoping that it
will keep them from finding females, in an effort to
reduce their population...
There ARE other ways to "CONTROL" pest populations;
The pheromone is definately a lesser evil but!!
What the proponents didn't mention is the large number
of non target lepidoptera "moths" that are also
attracted to the same chemical pheromone (Tetradecenyl
acetate) or it's effects on their life cycle and the
life cycle of their predators.
Ornithologists in the room?
Do you like to look at colorfull moths and butterfly's? collector?
some other concerns...
See below; for a list of lepidoptera that are also
attracted to the same pheromone..
Consider the predators of moths;
Bats:
Some of the non target "moths" might be hold over food
sources for the bats that gorge themselfs on
mosquito's, less food for bats means, less bats to eat
mosquito's. More mosquito's means higher chances of less concerned Boards and reps authorising "crop-dusting" to kill mosquitos..
This is a domino effect!
The non-target moths may also be hold-over food
sources for small birds of prey such as the American Kestrel;
The Kestrel normally feeds on
grasshoppers and other flying insects, small birds, small rodents etc.. Durring summer months.
The Kestrel is a "protected" species..
There are a number of mating pairs of Kestrels in THIS
county... What if they feed on the non target moths
durring seasons that other food source are not available.. What if
there are not enough moths flying around to support
this protected species...
Besides the synthetic pheromone concerns, more info is
needed on the innert chemicals of the "capsule"
materials deemed to be "trade secrets" used for the
delivery vehicle in aerial dispersion. I'm guessing they don't want to tell, because it's bad, or a trade secret so they can execute and maintain a "monopoly" on their product...
We need long term studies to determine "FACTS" such as toxicity
effects of long term exposure for other species. Fish,
foul, worms, snails, slugs, grasshoppers, dragon fly's
etc.. And weather or not it is toxic/non toxic to
their predators. Do you eat fish?
Entertaining those that pretend not to wear tin-foil hats..
We also need to know what it's effects as a "binary"
component may be.. Accidental exposure of two or more
compounds that by themselfs might be "non-toxic" but
together; even in minute quantity could become a
highly toxic agent.. How do we know they aren't really
targeting "PEOPLE" selectively placing other
components of a binary "POISON" in their invironments,
as a cumulative toxin, then deploying the activator...
(E)-11-Tetradecenyl acetate
pheromone chemical name;
a list of lepidoptera females that are known to
have a pheromone attractant for the sole purpose
of attracting mates; apparently it is the pheromone
Chemical name Tetradecenyl acetate..
This list is just those moths KNOWN to this ONE
