    my notebook review *DUW*

so my notebook came in yesterday...

    and it's a beast!!!

    here's the specs:

    - HP Pavilion dv9500t CTO NB (its the dv9500T but custom built)
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    * this is the new santa rosa platform
    - 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
    - 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
    - HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Webcam + Microphone
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
    *wireless A G and N +bluetooth
    - 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    just a quick profile pic

front view *note the 10 key pad*

this is the cover it's hard to see buy hp put very light marking on it
*it's very stylish unfortunately you can only get one design on the 17" notebooks*

they did the same type of printing on the inside also

here's a side view for port reference
i rather like the layout as puting ports on the back is just a bad idea
*/s-vid vga 10/100/1000 56K HDMI usb usb fir ewire and sd/ms/mmc/xd reader

    other side:
power port usb dvd-rw (plus lightscribe) mini PCI-E USB
the PCI-E slot doubles as a storage slot for the media center remote (IR)

the IR receiver is on the front of the unit along with the WiFi switch and headphone/mic ports (it has dual headphone out for sharing in say an airplane)

here is a pic of the remote:

and something i was worried about: the charger
most 17" power hosues come with a brick like power converter well this one is very light and or normal size:

i found that the keyboard is very nice because it is a 17 notebook the keys are normal size... not shrunk like other unit's

although the way they placed the arrow keys then had to shorten the shift..

i tend to hit up arrow alot more then i hit shift

some of the normal keys are now on "FN" such as the print screen pause break and sys rq

right above the keyboard is a very neet touch bar thats controls your media (next/back play/pause stop valume and mute) it also has a dvd and hp's "quick play" software hot keys, im yet to see if they are programmable

the altec lansings are typical of most notebooks with poor bass , but overall they sound very clear and have some nice volume

and now for a bit more technical part of the insides!!

when i went to remove the keyboard i found i had to remove the battery and take out 6 screws holding the header panel on and one more screw that was just hiding on the bottom to help secure the massive 101/102 key board in place

while i was poking around under the screen i noticed that the hinge is MUCH larger then any other notbook including other 17's i hope that that means it'll last a very long time

and you can tighten the screws!

underside of the unit taken apart

note that there is 2 HDD bays but if you order one hdd you don't get the cage for a second hdd

    and it's required for installation

they sent my unit out with a Western digital scorpio... a better hdd imho

something i like about this unit is that when you take off the ram cover you
can see/change your clock battery.. very nice (might be handy)

over all it's about 7.5 lbs loaded (not including charger)

not the lightest but I'm a big guy and 7 lbs is nothing

very vibrant screen but not too colorfully

and the brightness is ncie and even

if you let it sit idle you'll expect to see about 3 hours untill it shuts down loaded playing dvd i only got 2.5 (so you cant watch titanic on one charge)

it's very quiet thanks to the one LARGE 60 (ish) mm fan and the low heat centrino duo (base on the core 2 duo)

and for those who want to know this unis scores as following (vista BSR)

    CPU 5.1
    RAM 4.8
    GFX for vista 3.4
    GFX for games 4.3
    hard disk 4.9

this is a newer GPU so i expect it to be faster with new drivers (it went from 3.0 to 3.4 with the last driver update

Looking really nice Star! Thank you also for sharing the pics.

Your customers were wondering, now that you got your new lappy, would you be able to start actually fixing their system?

Can you use it on your lap without turning your legs into jerky?

dispite it's high end parts yes...

the core 2 duo's run very cool and like i said *above* it's has one nice large fan =-D

    also

on of the main reasons i didn't opt for the next up GFX card (basic card is X3100 , mine is the 8400GS, the high end is the 8600gs)

is that the 8600 sucks down alot more power and it also runs hot (compared)

Amazing thing about a laptop. a 7 pound laptop will weigh 25 pounds when you put it in a back pack.

My dual core dell runs slower and cooler on batteries. but even on power, its alot cooler than my single core I had before.

now, add to that bag, an external hdd. the power cable, a few usb cables, network cable, a log book, 4 jump drives, Ipod, adapter cables for Siemens, GE Fanuc, and AB PLCs, pen, pencil, red pen, eraser, calculator (HP 48GX), three cell phones (why cant they just make one that works anywhere in the world that I like). chargers for said phone. two power converters, camera, DVD RW, extra primary battery, extra media bay battery, and a floppy disk drive (which should probably be left in the office).
