Where is your anti-virus program? Where are you located? Your ISP shows AOL in Dulles, VA, your log shows entries in the start pages for the UK, but this entry in your HJT log
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E2117A93-CE96-4EA7-9503-D07B2061001A}: NameServer = 213.191.74.11 213.191.92.82
points to HanseNet Telekommunikation, Hamburg, Germany. Did you enter this domain?

    Wanted some clarifications and also to see if clues could be found so have looked through all of your previous threads here and one thing I noticed is that back in January you posted this;
    http://forum.networktechs.com/showthread.php?t=807
Had to completely reinstall Win XP Pro due to problems which I was unable to solve.
You never said what the problems were that caused the reinstall...
Have the problems you are experiencing with msconfig been present since that reinstall?
I also found two other threads where it was noted that you have no anti-virus program on the computer...this goes back several months.

    Msconfig

    HI

Checked out forum thread and found your response. No email notification was rcvd, No idea why.

Regarding anti-virus, I use zonealarm security suite which I was under the impression had both anti-virus and anti-spyware incorporated. Is that not so?

My location is Germany but Windows installed in English (due to language difficulties)

At one time AOL was my ISP but no longer. It is obvious that there are entries still show them as such. My new ISP is Hansenet and based in Hamburg as suggested. I suppose my domain is shown automatically (forgive my basic knowledge in these matters).

Regarding previous thread which involved reinstallation, as far as I can remember it had a lot to do with WMP11 which was just not installing correctly - installed process always mentioned something to with WMP9 even though I was trying to update to WMP11. T/4 decided to start from scratch whereby was then able to update to wmp11.

In all honesty I must admit only after noticing that my msconfig page was being activated on each startup that it dawned on me that the system.ini section was completely blank. Even though it is no longer starting up automatically, the system.ini section is still blank.

SYSTEM.INI was a basic configuration file used in early versions of Microsoft Windows to load device drivers and the default Windows shell Program Manager or Windows Explorer. Many of these settings were honored in Windows 9x, although the files had begun to be phased out in favor of the Windows registry. Windows XP still acknowledges some entries in the SYSTEM.INI file, to provide backwards compatibility with older 16-bit applications. However, when a fresh install of XP is performed, the SYSTEM.INI file created is initially blank.

You are correct about Zone Alarm Suite, it is the complete package. Sorry on that one.

You have a huge amount of items running in the background AND at start up which are totally unnecessary.

    Msconfig

    Hi

Yr response understood. The fact that no problems are currently being experienced perhaps this baby can be put to bed.
Before so doing can you please if possible indicate to me which progs you refer to that are running in the background and at start up which are not required so that I can disable them.
I have never been able to decipher which ones are required.

    Tks

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, time got away from me. Here are my assessments for programs you either don't need or don't need to be running at start up. Use Mike Lin's StartUpControl Panel to stop the auto starting of these, rather than msconfig.

    You have way too many security programs running all the time. Pick ONE of these and disable the rest;
    WinPatrol
    !AVG Anti-Spyware
    Windows Defender
    Ad-Watch

    There is no reason at all to run these all the time in the back ground either;
These first three below all do pretty much the same thing and to have them all on one system, and all running is frankly way too much. : removes "junk" files to free up disk space; adjusts Internet settings for better performance; removes invalid registry keys; and adjusts several registry settings that can improve overall performance. You are really risking damaging the registry by having all these registry cleaners running all the time. Registry cleaning really is not something to be taken lightly, it also is not something that needs to be or should be done regularily and you really should know what you are doing before doing this. Don't use Advanced Settings on CCleaner. Just use Default settings.
I would say UNINSTALL the top two, leave CCleaner, but do not ever let it run in the background. Don't use Advanced Settings on CCleaner. Just use Default settings.

    PC Pitstop Optimize Scheduler
    Registry Cleaner Scheduler
    ccleaner

The following Auto Update settings are not necessary....run the updates manually and eliminate these and do the updates manually
    TkBellExe...Real Player
    SunJavaUpdateSched...Sun Java
    SBAutoUpdate...SpywareBlaster
    QuickTime Task
    iTunesHelper
    ISUSScheduler... InstallShield Update Service Scheduler
    ISUSPM Startup...InstallShield Update Service Scheduler
Registry Cleaner Scheduler...noted above. UNINSTALL the whole program
AutoSizer...a totally unnecessary program. One click of your keyboard should do this...F11 key
    Here are other unnecessary starts...
    MsnMsgr...run it manually
Picasa Media Detector...can be run manually
PCMService...Part of the Dell Media Experience software. Appears to be related to Power Cinema. Reports have shown that this program repeatedly checks your disk for a file. This could cause performance issues.
NeroFilterCheck...Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Checks for driver issues
Cmaudio... System tray control panel for C-Media based soundcards - often included on popular motherboards with in-built audio. Available via Start -> Settings -

    Msconfig

    Hi

Carried out your instructions to the best of my ability.
Also took it upon myself to run AVG Rootkit as well as HJT
Rootkit as previously came up clean.

The HJT log was done in normal start mode. Having utilized Mike Lin's prog no doubt there should be differences since I disabled what you suggested.

I appreciate what you said regarding too many security programs running but I am somewhat confused and would like some clarification
E.G. Am I to understand that WInPatrol is actually a security prog and were I to disable Zone Alarm Security Suite / Windows Defender and Ad-Watch it would be safe? I ask this because my Anti-Virus is incorporated in Zone Alarm Suite.
My knoledge regarding Firewall is basic hence my concern. ZA Security Suie I gather provides protection against Virus and also offers Firewall protection.

Since carrying out your latest instructions I notice that when I restart my PC
the details of My Computer activates automatically. Have I done something in error and is there a function to prevent that happening.

I trust that your instructions were done correctly thus far

    Tks
    Xonk

Leave the Zone Alarm Security Suite running. This one is the most important.
Turn off Win Patrol, !AVG Anti-Spyware, Ad-Watch.

Install SpywareBlaster. Very important and does not run in the background. Keep it updated and enabled, including Restricted Sites portion

    Msconfig

    Hi Judy

Your latest instruction performed. One last thing before closing this thread

Previously you had said that until matter resolved I should start msconfig in normal startup mode. Is it ok to return to selective mode now as it was previously.
