    No Internet...

    Hi,

    Working on a friends computer and there is no Internet. When I boot to Safe Mode with Networking the internet works fine. I scanned with Ad-Aware, and scanned for viruses with AVG. Ad-Aware found a few things but didn't fix it.

    Here is a copy of the Hijack This log:

    One thing I see on the computer is probability of the Trojan.VMMSWM
    Indicated by this entry in the log;
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mmc.dll C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmc.dll

    And your friend has portions, at least, of two anti-virus programs on the computer, AVG and Norton.

    If there is a way of downloading Ewido to the computer, installing and updating this would really help. See if you can find a way to do this and let me know.

    If these steps concerning Add/Remove and uninstalls work better now in Safe Mode then do them in Safe Mode

    Next go to Add/Remove
    Look for and remove the following if found;
    Bear in mind some of these may not show in Add/Remove

    Any listing for Norton, Symantec, Norton LIve Update, etc.
    Ares
    Aida
    Butterfly Oasis
    Error Guard
    Screen Scenes
    ViewPoint

    Next navigate to C:\Program Files
    look for any of these folders and delete if found
    Norton, Symantec, Norton LIve Update, etc.
    Ares
    Aida
    Butterfly Oasis
    Error Guard
    Screen Scenes
    ViewPoint

    Reboot back into safe mode and run AVG and fix all found. Run the AdAwareSE and tell it to fix everything found. If you were able to install Ewido on the computer then run it also. Do a full system scan and fix everything found and save the log.
    Reboot to normal mode and run HJT again.
    Place checkmarks next to any of these items still remaining;

    O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B0537E6A-B9AE-C35A-A388-973B8671279C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\garnc.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BO1HelperStartUp] C:\PROGRA~1\BUTTER~1\BO1HEL~1.EXE /partner BO1
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ErrorGuard] C:\Program Files\ErrorGuard\ErrorGuard.Exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [98D0CE0C16B1] rundll32.exe D0CE0C16B1,D0CE0C16B1
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LXCFCATS] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\LXCFtim e.dll,_RunDLLEntry@16
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [upme] lexplore.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rpjaadf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\POOL32~1.EXE
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aida] "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\MYDOCU~1\CROSOF~1\chkntfs.e xe" -vt mt
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mmc.dll C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmc.dll

    Once you have placed the checkmarks then click the FIX button and exit HJT.
    Reboot the computer and run HJT again and save the log. Post back here with the HJT log and the Ewido log if you able to find a way to run it.

    Don't forget to DELETE the baddies! Fixing the entries with HJT does NOT do this (except 02 related entries). You really should remove all malware completely.
    Then, be sure to flush your System Restore points.

    -- Also, I suggest installing SP2, once machine is clean!

    Best

    I agree 100% with PP. You can't be certain everything is clean until you have also searched for and removed those files manually. I hope you will post the Ewido log for us and the new HJT log.
    There may be other items hiding there which need to be looked at too, we could see these with the new logs.
