Question No network computer can connect to Vista

    Hi,
I just got a brand new PC running Vista. I plugged it into the network. It can see all the other PCs on the network, and access their shared folders. It can also access the Internet.

However, no other PC can access anything on the new Vista PC. Sometimes, not always, an icon for the Vista PC is displayed in Windows Explorer-Networks-Workgroup on the other computers. However, when 2xclicking on the icon, an error message comes up that this computer cannot be accessed. They all use the same workgroup. I have verified that and that the icon pops up there sometimes under the workgroup seems to confirm it. Also, the IP addresses all PCs get when they are started look good.

The other computers run both XP-pro and Win2000 pro.

    Any hints, ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt

You need to enable "Network Discovery"
    To do this:
click Start, right-click Network, and then click Properties.
    Then turn on "Network Discovery"

By default vista sets all file and folder sharing as VERY secure... this can be annoying as im sure you have just found when first trying to enable file sharing... all you have to do is go into the network sharing window in vista and change all the default values to whatever suits your network.. for example, you will find as default that you need a local profile set up on the vista machine to access it from the xp machine, this can be disabled... this is one of many features that you will need to look at to determine what needs to be set to on or off...

With what Judy said, if your network isn't set up for Network Discovery and file sharing in Vista (which is a royal pain as I've done it a few times) you are going to have issues.

There is a default share in vista that EVERY vista machine has on a clean install, that if you don't modify the registry for, will always be there....as an "administrative tool."
