    Server Busy box during startup

I am running Windows XP, service pack 2. I am using Verizon Security Suite, but whenever I startup the computer, a box appears that says "Server Busy This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem."

My HijackThis log looks like this:

    In addition to the Verizon Security Suite I also see this entry;
    O23 - Service: DvpApi (dvpapi) - Authentium, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe
which is Authentium Antivirus. This means you are running at least portions of TWO antivirus programs. This is an absolute no-no. Did you used to run Authentium Anti-virus?

Thanks for responding. The only other Antivirus software I have had was McAfee, which I uninstalled when I got Verizon. I will sometimes shut down the Verizon Security Suite to run Spybot, but I have no idea how Authentium would have gotten there.

I ran the online scan and one line showed up in RED. It was this one:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Kaspersky's Online Scanner did not detect any viruses, but I am sure that the "Server Busy - Switch To" message when I launch windows XP must be some type of bug.

    Any ideas?

    If you used the analyzer on this forum please see the following thread;
    IMPORTANT: HiJackThis Analyzer Information
This entry is most likely related to the fact that you also have Microsoft Office auto starting. This file is usually related to the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don\'t need these features.

Now the problem you are having often times is caused by bad or corrupted or conflicting software, or it could be not enough system resourses...
Have you done a good cleanup of the system lately?
I think I would disable some of those unnecessary start up items and see if it makes a difference...especially any that you have recently installed.
Here are some which are automatically running at Start Up which do not need to do so and can be run manually.

    TV Now
    Cpqset
    ADUserMon
    Iomega Drive Icons
    Deskup
    SunJavaUpdateSched
    MusicMatch
    Smart Start UP
    QuickTime Task
    iTunes
    Sony Ericsson PC Suite
MSMSGS (this is Windows Messenger NOT an IM program it is not needed to run at start up)
SsAAD.exe (Sony SonicStage software related - "Atrac Hard Disk Monitor)
    Veoh
    NZSearch
    Microsoft Office
    QuickShelf 2000
    iPod Service

Try turning off all of the above and see if it makes a difference. I would also do a file search for Authentium, first in Add/Remove.
I believe it can also be listed under Command Software, so look for both. Remove whatever you find.
Try getting rid of these unnecessary starts and see if that makes a difference.

Everything looks good so far after turning off the suggested items. The problem did go away and come back yesterday before I posted to this board, but that's consistent with your diagnosis of a system resources issue.

I couldn't find anything about Authentium in Find/Remove programs. There are three files in the Program Files/Common Files/Command Software directory:

    dvpapi.exe
    dvpmgr.exe
    dvpnt.inf

I have no idea how they got there. Should I delete them even though things appear to be fine now?

I really appreciate your quick response. Thank you very much.

For now, I would leave the Command Software on the computer. It is very possible that it is a component of the Verizon anti-virus program or your university vpn software...In fact I would check with both of them and see if these are connected to either one as it is used by various security suites.

If you are constantly having system resource problems then you really probably are having too much run at one time and/or you need to update your computer.
Some of the items I noted will put themselves back to auto start everytime you use them.
One easy way to control the auto starts is to use Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel
This a FREE, very easy to use program. Once you download it you will then find it in your Control Panel. Just open the program and remove the checkmarks from the programs you wish to stop from automatically running on start up.
Some things that put themselves back each time you use them are, Quicktime, iTunes, iPod, MusicMatch, RealPlayer, AIM, but ALL can easily be started manually. Just remember when you use them and before you shut down go back into Mike Lin's program and remove the new listing for the program that turning it on has generated.
Keep in mind that music programs, games, tv and graphics all consume a lot of system resources when used.
How much RAM do you have on the system?

Thanks for the tip. Mike Lin's sounds great.

I have 448 MB of RAM on my laptop.

You really should consider adding more ram. That is probably where your problem lies. RAM is fairly inexpensive and an easy way to speed things up and not deplete your resources.
Give me more info on the computer, this way maybe I can find out how much RAM your system can handle.
You also might try running Belarc Advisor this will tell you pretty much everything about the system and also if it can handle more.

Thanks. I downloaded the apps you suggested.

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook PC. The maximum memory that it will allow is 1 GB. Unfortunately, I currently have 256K in each of the two slots. Does that mean that I'm going to have to replace both of them with 512 K modules to see a difference? Is it worth it?

Is there any way that you can get a screenshot of this particular error for us?
