    The problem went away when I reduced the number of programs running. So, it appeared to be a ram issue. I was responding to jholland64 who was giving me advice about purchasing more memory. I wanted to know if I have to replace both 256 modules with 512's in order to see a difference in performance.

    But, if you are interested in the particular problem that I first posted, I don't have a screen shot, but I found a picture of the exact same screen here -

    Hmmm...I can honestly say I've never seen that issue before...I was trying to figure out exactly where the error originated from.

    To answer your question about RAM, you can either upgrade just one, or both of your modules.

    If you are going to upgrade, you might as well upgrade both modules to 512MB from the current 256MB.

    Well, I took your advice and just got two 512MB RAM modules from Crucial and they don't work. I have an HP Pavilion Notebook ze5300 series (actually ze5375us) and I bought two 512MB 200-PIN SODIMM 64Mx64 DDR PC2700 NON-ECC PbF.

    When I installed them the computer would not boot. It had power. In addition to the Power light, the caps lock, num lock etc. lights came on, but unlike a regular bootup, those lights never went off. The fan and everything came on, but nothing ever appeared on the screen.

    I reseated the memory several times and used good anti-static procedures.

    Then I put one of the old 256MB modules in along with one of the new ones. The computer booted, but only showed 256MB of RAM. I attempted the same thing with the other new 512, and again it only recognized the old 256MB RAM.

    I even switched which slot had the 256 and which one had the 512 and got the same results.

    The bottom line is that neither of my new memory modules is being recognized in either slot.

    All lines at Crucial are busy and the recording is telling me to call back later. I couldn't find any information at HP either. Any ideas?

    Sounds to me like you didn't purchase the correct type. Especially since neither one is recognized. Have you just tried ONE on these new memory modules...I mean all by itself? Try that and place it in the first slot and see if it is recognized. Then try the other one, in the same slot, ALONE again...see if it is recognized.
    The HP Website shows 512MB, 266MHz, 200-pin, PC2100 SO-DIMM as the memory upgrades for your computer.

    I agree with Judy. You either got bad chips, or they are incompatible with your laptop (usually caused by a different speed)

    Here is some general info;
    Every time the computer starts, it takes inventory of hardware. Inventory consists of the computer BIOS recognizing, acknowledging, and in some cases, assigning addresses to, the components in the computer. If the computer won't boot, the CPU is unable to communicate with hardware. The cause can be improper installation or failure of the BIOS to recognize hardware. Visit the HP website and make certain that you have the latest version of the BIOS. This applies especially when you have recently installed new software or you are significantly upgrading memory.

    I would absolutely check for BIOS updates. I would also check to be absolutely certain you have purchased the correct memory.

    More Info;
    I have searched multiple sites where you can purchase memory upgrades....ALL of them including HP, and with the exception of Crucial, recommend PC2100 DDR-266

    I really believe you purchased the incorrect memory.

    Please click on the blue PC2100 directly above for info. Click on the 512 listing, then click the Compatibility tab then click on To See a Complete list of devices Click Here. You will see your computer.

    As the admins said,you probably don't have the correct chips,I would take it up with the business you bought them from.Also in the future make sure that you have all the pertinent information when purchasing hardware.Like here they need that kind of info to make informed decisions,otherwise you get whatever they give you.Kinda like buying a starter for a car and getting a Ford model instead of a Chevy.

    Thanks everyone for all of the advice.

    I finally got in touch with Crucial and it seems that other people with my same computer model have encountered the same problem. As soon as I said the model number they didn't need to ask any more questions. They are sending me replacements that they promise will work.

    I'm also a little fearful about BIOS upgrades. I'll check for FAQ's about that here, but if any of you have any major warnings or tips, I welcome your input.

    Thanks again. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Don't do anything with the BIOS until and unless you experience problems with these replacements. Keep us posted.

    Crucial Tech said on the phone that several HP Pavilion users had trouble with that particular item, so they replaced them promptly and my computer now recognizes that my memory has doubled.

    Unfortunately, the performance is still not what I was hoping for. My CPU usage is still spiking up to 100% frequently, particularly when I am running Internet Explorer with anything else. Firefox has similar results. I am running Verizon's anti-virus and anti-spyware package and I know that uses up some memory, but I still think something is not right.

    Any ideas?
