I'll have to try to log in as the administrator when I get home. have to do that in safe mode, as I have the admin account.

I tried the other Admin user on the computer and got the same results.

I tried disabling System Restore, same issue.

The only A/V that I have is AVG, and I don't have any problems downloading...but I shall try disabling it and see if that works.

What service pack was the OS on when it crapped out?
The Windows XP CD you used to run the sfc, what version was that?
I don't think disabling the AV scanner will help either but worth a try.

I think the problem is the corrupted system files, corrupted meaning there is a version conflict between the files being modified during the installations...

This originally crapped out when running XP Pro SP2. I used my Pro SP2 CD to do the sfc.

After that failed to fix the issue, I did a repair with the same XP SP2 CD.

Hmm..in that case, there shouldn't have been any problem but then again I do not know what kinda software related issues were lurking on the system, regardless repair-install would wipe out the registry and the Windows folder so previous installed applications or registry corruptions wouldn't have any effect so I am guessing something went ka ka during the repair-install unless you installed something (application, windows update, etc.) prior to the install issue surfacing....

Time to backup your data from the sata and do a fresh install?

I didn't have any issues besides the Updates flaking out...I think I'll try another sfc and see if that finds anything...I'm just not sure.

I would really not look forward to a clean install, I hate doing that, hence why I do daily image backups of my system...

Daily image backups? Using what program? Were you not able to revert back to an older image?

Can you get me all EventViewer log files saved with .evt extension?

Yeah. DriveImageXML like always. And no. The updates worked one month, the next...nothing. I don't have enough drive space to keep more than 2 backups. So I have my daily and my weekly. By the time I noticed it, the weekly wasn't of any use either

So riddle me this....Windows updates....now work.

I went to restart my computer, and it gave me the option to shutdown and install updates....So I did....they all installed perfectly...as did the last 3 updates.

I'm at a loss as to why it would happen, but it's better now.

Honestly, I've only done what I've documented here....I had given up for the time being. But it's good that it's working again.
